Its not a matter of trust its just basic political relations.
Like I said I wouldn't care if he was lying I want Russia to take as much as Ukraine as possible I'm stating the obvious and countering the misinformation. Russia doesn't want to rule a hostile population of Nazis as much as denazification would make me happy its impractical from Russias perspective. They want Eastern territorys. Racing to a large nations capital in the early days of a war in lieu of your actual territorial gains is designed to collapse the government and end the war.
Calling Ukraine an artifical state doesn't mean it shouldn't exist btw.
I'll tell you why Putin wants Ukraine, to stop accession to the EU. NOT NATO, NATO membership is a smokescreen (which was clear when Finland and Sweden joined NATO as a direct result of the invasion). Just look at what's going on in Georgia for evidence of how important stopping Ukraine, Georgia or any ex-Soviet states joining the EU is for the Kremlin. Why? Because if they bloom into the next Poland, Russian citizens are going to start asking, why can't we have a bit of that too? Putin cannot allow that to happen.
Current polls indicate that Ukrainians desire to join the EU is anywhere from 75% to 91%. Georgia is similar at 80%. It's clear what Putin is trying to stop.
