I have agreed to run a half marathon but haven't really properly prepared for it yet. I have a couple of weeks left to get fitter and have been told my training runs should be at least 10 miles. Does anyone have any advice other than run ten miles?

I'm a former collegiate T&F runner. 2 weeks to go is too short to do very much new. Maybe try the 10 miles ASAP just to know what it feels like (if you don't). But do it soon, so you're fully recovered and able for the race. Anything else, especially close to race day, and you very well may be lacking ability for a full effort. You won't become a better runner in 2 weeks, so no need to take on workouts that tax the legs before they get used to them.

Besides the 10 miles, just continue with whatever fitness routine you are doing. Increased stretching between now and then is a good idea though. Feeling loose and flexible before the run is always good. Also, drink enough water the night before (without pissing all night) and get a cup in soon as you get up.

Are you already a dedicated runner, or more of a couch potato?

Either way get yourself a heart rate monitor, and go out and run for as long as you possibly can. Hopefully you already have an aerobic base (you can run for 30+ minutes non-stop @ 145-160bpm), if you don't then you haven't got much of a hope. To truly compete you need to have put in many weeks of training running above your aerobic zone - usually 170bpm - and that's a real killer for a novice. If you have an aerobic base you'll certainly finish, albeit probably not near the front.

Here''s some stuff you might find useful...

Thank you for your advice it is good sound input. I do have a heart rate monitor and I use it all the time. I am not used to running 10 miles so I will try this tonight. I weight train quite a bit, swim aswell and hit bags alot, I do run but not that regular but when I do I am a strong runner because of my regular training program, I think I need to cut out the weekend parties though.

Hey man....i'll be doing one dec. 9th.....let me know howit goes

If you haven't prepared properly and given yourself enough time, quit. Not being a smart ass but it is too late. Pick something else 3 months away and prep for it. 13.1 miles is loooooong when you are not ready. You should have been running 10 for a while prior to run.

I like breaking the rules and breaking through my own personal levels buddy. I will decide when it's time to quit.

Just be sure to come back and tell us all which mile marked you decided to quit and walk. Since this is your first half and you don't do distance, I will be nice and say 2 hours. Anything longer and I wouldn't be bragging. Good luck.

Two weeks is not enough time to effectivly prepare but just go out their and fight.

I will do my best, but still haven't stopped partying.
