If he wants to beat Jones he will need to be in the best shape of his life. He already has cardio issues when he has a full camp.

He will get his shot at Jones if he waits so why throw it away on short notice?

They could make him an offer he can't refuse

Why wouldn't he, he'll make ufc brass extremely grateful and def has a punchers chance and its a paychecl and prolly a decent one as well
We'll see how it all plays out

Jones won't accept non title fight with Rumble on a short notice. There is nothing to gain from Jones, fight vs Rumble should be as a title defense

Shouldn't he be training so if either gets injured late he can step in?

Training camps wear you down, make you prone to injury. It costs money to run a legit camp. People need breaks from work to stay motivated.

It would be crazy for him to stay fight-ready for a maybe.

This is the biggest maybe for a long time though. Champ vs ex champ. If there's any fight you wanna be ready for its this one.

Because Jones has never accepted short time fights! It will not happen, expect "Jones vs Cormier 2" on 200 or 201

If he wins hes beat the concensus best fighter in the world, done the UFC a big favour and got himself a title shot.

That's stupid?

thats the best scenario

I think this is a common misconception, that fighters should train in case of a replacement.

While I agree they should stay in shape, I don't think that everyone can afford training partners just for the chance of replacing someone.

Rumble need to pay some tall dudes to mimic Jones etc etc. Meaning he needs specialized partners for every fight. And that costs money.

SOLUTION: I think that the UFC needs to sponsor camps for big fights and main events. Paying 3 people(2 fighters + replacement) extra 10G's to save the event in nothing compared to losing the event.

Or he could get demolished and never get a shot at Jones again. Why risk it when he can get a proper shot with a full camp?

If I was jones I wouldn't fight anyone but DC for the belt. The man wants his belt back and nothing else.
