Rum 5

If I could afford to travel, I would have loved to do this one; the lineup is beyond awesome.

I've got a feeling that the biggest raw total of the weekend isn't going to happen at RUM though...

whos this?

damn, that is an amazing lineup

Raw Unity Powerlifting Championships - RUM Roster

might have to watch a little of that tomorrow if i have some time, thanks for posting that

I thought Vashon Perryman was competing this weekend in Oklahoma City, but it looks like he's on the RUM 5 roster, so nevermind. The last time he competed, he did a 1548 total (584 squat, 644 deadlift, 320 bench press) at 165 lbs., and he was three weeks from a bodybuilding competition. I don't know what he's shooting for this time around, but 1600+ probably isn't out of the question for him.

Here are some thoughts on the RUM roster, if you're not familiar with some of these names:

Naomi Kutin's nine or ten years old and is going to try for the squat world record at (I think) 97 lbs. She's squatted over twice her bodyweight in competition before.

I met Amy Weisberger at Westside when I was there, and she's super nice; she's also trying to reclaim her 148-lb. raw world total record, and I think she's going to take a shot at it at RUM.

Jill Mills is a legend as a female strength athlete and will put up a huge total.

For the lightweights, Joe Morrow is an awesome 132/148 lb. lifter with a share of the 132-lb. raw world record (he did a 1361 total without knee wraps). For this meet, he's trying for a ten-times-bodyweight total without wraps, though I don't know what weight class he's competing in.

Tom Roselli is a great local lifter from my home state of Rhode Island, and he and Zach Waggner are both excellent top-20 165 lbers. capable of approaching a 1400-lb. total. Best lightweight lifter will probably be a toss-up between Morrow and Perryman.

Sam Byrd is probably the best squatter at middleweight and is one of the best raw squatters in the world. He's shooting for a 800-lb. raw squat at 220 lbs. Jay Nera is the #1-ranked 220-lber. in the US for raw lifters and has totaled 1900+ raw at that weight. Jeremy Hamilton's #3 at 220 lbs., and Dan Green is a NASA guy and another top-10 220 lber. I think you'll see Adam Hires have a big meet at 242 (he's super strong), and Perry Ellis is one of the best 275s in the country, a 2000+ raw lifter. Many people know Henry Thomason, who has the all-time world record for single ply squatting (1058, I think) and is basically an awesome squatter whether raw, single ply, or multi ply.

Some of the bench-only guys are awesome too. Al Davis could be the third guy ever to bench press 700 lbs.; he has that sort of power. Garret Griffin is shooting for 500 lbs. at 198 lbs., and Manenkoff is going for 400 lbs. at 165 lbs. And, of course, Johnnie Jackson is known as a bodybuilder, but he's also a 800+ lb. deadlifter.

Looking forward to see what Jay Nera does, I watched a lot of his stuff when I saw his name at the top of my potential weight class, guys a beast

Feels good to see some Canadians up there (Nera and Hamilton).

Hamilton wants to go 2000+:

I think 2000 is in there, just have to have a good day. I'll try for 2000 on third attempts.

Here's Kade Weber (also Canadian) pulling 750x3 and he's competing at 242. He's 21 and RUM 5 is his first "major meet". The guy you hear in the video is Willie Albert, who's no slouch, either. I think Jay Nera, Willie Albert and this Kade Weber guy all train at the same gym.

Nera on Weber:

In time, Kade is going to be the best powerlifter to ever come out of Canada. Bold statement....but the truth.

Malanichev has done 480 kg (1058 lbs), as well.

It's insane how little he gets out of his suit.

damn, now im pretty damn pumped to watch this, it looks like he had more in the tank on that deadlift

I'd be very impressed if Perryman goes 1600@165. With no knee wraps and stricter judging (compared to nasa), that would be an unbelievable total at his weight.

Also footage of Johnny Jackson training for RUM.

If I go grocerie-shopping now, I will probably not miss anything but more mediocre rock and nothing happening, will I?

It's, like, a really long meet, lol. I think even if you miss something, you'll be okay. These things always start late.

they are on bench already? i just tuned in....seems like 2 hours was awfully fast to go through the entire squat

EDIT: am i doing something wrong? its just showing the same 1 minute loop over and over again

I'm getting the same thing.

And I don't think they squatted first; I think RUM holds the bench press first, in contrast to other federations.

Also, as far as delays go, this is ridiculous, even by powerlifting meet standards.

yeah it is, the "mobile camera" is working, showing an empty squat rack, is this thing really 2 hours late?

now the "platform camera" is working for me too, showing the squat stands too

It looks like they start with squats after all. RUM does things their own way, so I just assumed they'd switch up the order of lifts for the hell of it.

Apparently the 9am start time includes a "rules meeting." I've never heard of a two-hour rules meeting before. So, yes, they're really two hours late.
