These are the best fighters, as well as athletes, that you can find with $20,000 for 6 months of work. Hell, even $100,000 for 6 months of work won't bring in elite talent.
WMMA was introduced into the UFC solely because of the potential seen in Ronda.

As for sports like tennis, it's completely different. It's a very people-friendly game, it's a great activity for kids, it's something you can play for your entire life against anyone of any age, it's a social activity for basically anyone, and it's watched by millions more than a WMMA fight. If things don't work out and you don't win Grand Slam titles, well, presumably you were finishing HS and college while playing on the team...
You won't get talents like Serena in WMMA for such little money.

It also applies to MMA in general. The world's best athletes aren't competing in MMA because so many other sports are so much more lucrative and/or don't involve being punched in the face for a living. NBA, NFL, NHL, Soccer, Tennis, Golf, etc, etc.

That doesn't mean there aren't some very good athletes in MMA, and that a few of them aren't world class athletes, but on average the level of athlete is markedly lower than in many other sports.
