Social Rolling Stone's 'Brown Sugar'....racist! Cancelled!!!

That was the first song I learned in Open G tuning on my old Mexican Tele.

I always thought it was about heroin. <shrug>
Hah, yeah, I've heard that before.

Not the first time they've put a song in the time out chair. They didn't play Sympathy For The Devil for years.

"Woo Woo!"

That's definitely a song I mumble sang.

Blah blah blah, BROWN SUGAR, blah blah....

I never read the lyrics before. They are freaking hard core! If you just read the lyrics I can see how people would think it's racists. You have to dig a little deeper then just the lyrics though. You can take any song, poem, written word and put your own opinions and thought into it. Just because you wrote something like "Four Dead in Ohio" doesn't mean you endorse killing college students.

It sounds like the Stones wrote it to show how terrible the slave trade was and how it was for women. I personally don't think they were singing the praises of slavery and rape.

This is the obvious take but the people who fetishise being offended have no time for nuance

The lyrics do seem pretty dark when you read them however I just watched a live version from when they were in their prime and you can barely even understand what he’s saying during the verses.

Gold coast slave ship bound for cotton fields
Sold in a market down in New Orleans
Scarred old slaver knows he's doing alright
Hear him whip the women just around midnight

Brown sugar how come you taste so good?
Brown sugar just like a young girl should

Drums beating, cold English blood runs hot
Lady of the house wonderin' where it's gonna stop
House boy knows that he's doing alright
You shoulda heard him just around midnight

Brown sugar how come you taste so good, now?
Brown sugar just like a young girl should, now

Ah, get along, brown sugar how come you taste so good, baby?
Ah, got me feelin' now, brown sugar just like a black girl should

I bet your mama was a tent show queen
And all her boyfriends were sweet sixteen
I'm no schoolboy but I know what I like
You shoulda heard me just around midnight

Brown sugar how come you taste so good, baby?
Ah, brown sugar just like a young girl should, yeah

I said yeah, yeah, yeah, woo
How come you... how come you taste so good?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, woo
Just like a... just like a black girl should
Yeah, yeah, yeah, woo

I have head this song a million times and never understood most of these lyrics. And I have always misheard the "how come you taste so good" line as "you know your daddy's no good". Crazy.

The real surprise is that Meredith Hunter isn’t interjected into the story.

Finally. Next we need to tackle the black or white song by Michael Jackson. Why only black or white why not brown?

It's up to them bit it would be good if people actually understood what lyrics in a song were about before they bitched.

Take "Black Betty " or even "American Women ".

That's the problem now days people don't research just jump of they think something might hurt someone's feelings.

Ok, ok, ok.... Just don't cancel Cherry Pie.. Not sure what I'll do.... lol

Dirty, rotten, filthy, stinkin'
She's my cherry pie
Cool drink of water, such a sweet surprise
Tastes so good, makes a grown man cry
Sweet Cherry Pie, yeah

Well, swingin' on the front porch, swingin' on the lawn
Swingin' where we want 'cause there ain't nobody home
Swingin' to the left and swingin' to the right
If I think about baseball, I'll swing all night, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Swingin' in the living room, swingin' in the kitchen
Most folks don't 'cause they're too busy bitchin'
Swingin' in there 'cause she wanted me to feed her
So I mixed up the batter and she licked the beater
I scream, you scream, we all scream for her
Don't even try 'cause you can't ignore her
<5>
