Roger - Xande WJJ 2008 question

i think he is mad because some people were saying he tapped. the match was over before he tapped

I'm just guessing so i'm sorry if i'm off base, but Gracie Barra usually rolls really deep to alot of events and are sometimes very vocally encouraging of their guys. Xande may have just been saying a big "what you got to say now!" type of statement to the Gracie Barra crowd. I could be wrong, just sayin, its possible.

Great match by the way.

Edit. My last idea was wrong.

This is an interview with Saulo after the no-gi worlds, but I'm sure it has something to do with it.

The FightWorks Podcast: When you got up from the mats, when you were announced the winner, you pointed at someone in the crowd. Who was it, and why?

Saulo Ribeiro: (I pointed) To my brother, because I think that some people from Gracie Barra owe him an apology because my brother never disrespected anybody, my brother never played cheap with anybody, and to hear what they said to my brother was not nice.
We always respect everybody. We never put anybody down. And Roger Gracie has all our respect. He is like an idol for all of us. We love to fight him because we know that we

saulo and xande are both great guys, ive had the pleasure to train with them both and they are not the type of people to play cheap like saulo said

everything ive ever seen of the ribeiro brothers has been very respectful. they appear, at least through interviews and vids to be very humble and appreciative for the opportunities they have. I cant imagine xande was talking smack.

thats not the right quote. I know for sure, that every Gracie barra was against xande, because he trains with all the other guys from brasa etc... so they think he is some kind of traitor.

whats why he goes nuts and "prove" them "right"

So becouse Xande from gracie huminita trains with guys from brasa, the guys from gracie barra think he is a traitor?

I just know that Barra is a lot of schools rivals. Isn't Jacare's school (Alliance?, nah what is it?) a big rival with GB?

Video is taking forever to download but I remember the scene quite well. Xande got up and was pounding his chest at the GB crowd and putting his finger to his lips like "shhh" and then pointing to the mat because he was saying that he had heart and that he did his talking on the mat. GB, as always, love them or hate them, rolled in DEEP to the finals as platfox noted. There were a lot of the guys talking smack to Xande because they though Roger was going to manhandle him. I also think they were trying to get on his nerves and unsettle him before the big match.

I would also like to note that Roger had NOTHING to do with it. Roger, as always, was pure class. Very stoic, preparing off in a corner and both he and Xande have stated afterwards that they both have the utmost respect for each other. But when you get that mob mentality going with a hundred or so GB guys all rowdied up and cheering it can get out of control. I actually thought some of the best atmosphere came when GB and Alliance would do their cheers back and forth. I thought it was awesome. Gracie Humaita had some cheers going too but they didn't have as many people. I was all good natured for the most part though but I hear they were talking some serious smack to Xande. So when he won the gold medal in the absolute division of the most prestigious BJJ tournament in the world...he let them know it!

I want to say that Jacare is somehow loosely tied to Humaita? I remember that he was one of the guys (along with Saulo) carrying Xande around after this match with Roger? I know he grew up in Manaus though. Does that help? What school is big in Manaus?

On a side note I've got some more pix of the teams here...

You can see the Barra and Alliance teams were going strong in the pyramid! I loved it when Barra would call out one of their guys. They would see someone sitting in the crowd across the way or, heaven forbid, in with the Alliance guys and they would all start this "ooo-aaah baa-ha ooo-aaah baa-ha" getting faster and louder and then shout the guys name. You could hear it everywhere in the pyramid and the guy would basically be "shamed" into getting his ass up out of his seat and make his way over to sit with the rest of the team. I had Romulo Barral sitting right behind me...

...for about 5 minutes before they called him over. Great atmosphere.

As for the fight I'll be honest. I'm a HUGE Xande fan as well as a HUGE Roger fan but I didn't like the way that Xande fought that fight. It was like "take down-stall-stall-stall-stall-standup." Then repeat. I don't think anyone there left with the idea that Xande's BJJ was necessarily superior to Rogers, just his take downs. Roger seemed to be the only guy who was actually trying to do stuff. Then again, when you're fighting Roger maybe that's the best game plan? Who am I to argue Xande freaking Ribeiro?

Rest of my Mundial pix for any that are interested...

Might also be confused because I think Jacare Cavalcante is Alliance?

I agree with the fight, that tactic seems so be the only that works on Roger. Its very easy to go and say "ah i will never go for point, only submission" etc that some do, but when you are in the final against Roger, i doubt that these people would acctuly back up their words :)

Romero Jacare got his black belt from Rolls. He started Alliance. Ronald Jacare has nothing to do with this.

If I recall correctly, Rolls and Carlson shared an academy at one time in Copacabana. After Rolls passed away, Rolls' wife asked Carlos Jr. to take over the academy. Eventually, Carlos Jr. moved the academy to Barra. This became Gracie Barra.

I may be wrong (or right) about a detail or two, but the academies are (were I guess) linked much more closely than they appear.
