It's that Yoel was always a great striker and he improves a lot every time after his fights. Yoel outstruck Machida in similar calm paced fashion. Called that this will be a standup match because Yoel recognizes Luke's submission threat and how he could gas himself out. You can check my threads from 4yrs ago me saying how amazing Yoel is, and people only now beginning to see Yoel's skills. By same prowess of insight I say that Luke's striking has improved, it's that Yoel is that good.

Luke hasnt improved at all, the holes he has in his boxing were just as prominent as they were against branch and bisping.

Luke needs to work on his clinch, hes a machine on the ground.clinch when guys are closing the distance and get the fight to where hes strongest.

He should stop boxing.

Knees, elbows, low kicks, high kicks, jits. That's it.

His boxing defence consist of just backing up. Yoel caught him because of it

I wanted Rockhold to win but his defence is absolutely terrible, Romero being a southpaw I knew he would connect over Luke's shoulder and that would be it.

Made some cash on it aswell, Rockhold is very open to left hands and he's been dropped by Bisping, Romero, Jacare with left hands. He's like Dos Santos where he refuses to fix his errors. It sucks because he's such an excellent fighter.

I agree with you TS, I think people are confused because it was that bad before that even with significant improvement it wasn't enough to avoid getting knocked out.

I think he'd have been better off wrestling.

HIs boxing did look better as TS pointed out, so i wouldn't say he hasn't improved at all.

But he still has those holes in his game. I think he should work on striking defense for sure, he also needs to figure out how to get more TDs.

I just looked at the KO gif again and noticed he positioned his lead leg in the middle of yoels legs that left him in a vulnerable and blind position to Romeros rear hook.

This is the same thing he did with bisping that allowed him to hooke over his shoulder and drop him so no he hasnt learned a thing it seems.

Im not sure about that, it looked good when romero stayed on the outside, once romero decided to get on the inside lukes holes started coming out once again.

For me personally luke struggles once his opponents decide they want to get on the inside.

When hes challenged inside his defense consists of backing up trying to regain distance.

Zero counters, head isnt tucked, no head movement..hed be better served looking for a jon jones eye poke while backing up.

Offensively his boxing did look improved. He was using feints to setup his shots and he used his jab more. But like others have said, he still has the same hole in his defensive technique. His footwork needs a lot of work and because of it he puts himself bad positions to be hit and being unable to counter or really even avoid damage. This tends to happen once his opponents start throwing combinations. Luke begins to panic and he backs straight up with no head movement and all semblance of footwork and defense go right out the window.

He's a very good fighter, but his boxing defense will always be his downfall until that hole is closed.

Rockhold wants to fight Gus at 205 apparently.

rockhold hands were to low to garner any respect in boxing terms.. his corner was screaming for him ot raise them.
romero throw 2 jabs before his overhand left and luke did not even raise his hands to defend an inch.. he just backed up.. OP... wat you see is garbage.

hard rock cafe should have at least attempted a takedown

his top control and gnp is just about the best in the business and yoel, despite his olympic pedigree, is not untakedownable

Rockhold looked improved offensively but had troubles defensively once Yoel started using his jab he looked lost..

People are underestimating Yoel's boxing/striking ..
His striking defense is superb and his boxing style is so unorthodox it troubles his opponents a LOT.
And his style is well served by his exceptionnal "A-Level" athlecism/power/explosivness ..

And people who are acting surprised about his boxing are probably forgetting/not knowing Yoel's half brother is a 6'4 world class cruiser weight boxer with a 29-1 pro record... So of course he is gonna be used to dealing with taller, rangier strikers...

I agree with you that he struggles when opponents close the distance and put him under pressure. That's a big hole in his game, as it always was.

But he did seem to have improved one aspect of his striking offence. I've never seen his hands look as good as they did in this fight.

He still needs to work on that defence because without it most top level guys will put him down.

I didn't know about that last bit. That's interesting - thanks for the info.

I know Yoel has the wrestling pedigree but Luke should have at least attempted some takedowns. When Luke gets people on the ground he does some serious damage. His boxing stand up did look improved but he still seemed a bit gun shy. I guess getting KO'ed by pillow fists Bisping is still haunting him.
