My buddy is coming up from Little Creek, Va this weekend, he just got some new climbing gear, so we will be out both Friday and Saturday in Great Falls doing some Top-rope and (maybe)Soloing....If anyone is in the NOVA area and would like to join in...we have some an extra fat boy harness....or you can trust my Ranger seat :)

I posted this in S&P as well....all in all it's less work with three

Is a ranger seat different from a Swiss seat? Because my buddy graduated Ranger school and I worked at a rock climbing wall, and when we talk about climbing he talks about using a Swiss seat, and I know what that is but I am unfamiliar with a Ranger seat.

Yeah same deal. Just a basic double under rope harness with a D ring. Usually use an ATC with it....but our climbing routes are usually one pitch (detonated slate rock faces of 40-60 feet) so we can get away with a simple tow strap and figure 8 set up without a true harness...

Cool. honestly, though, I'd rathere have a cheap simple unpadded webbing harness than a Swiss seat, just an issue of comfort, but i guess if you don't fall, it doesn't matter what type of harness you're wearing. Have fun climbing, man.

Thanks man,

Yeah he get's the pick of the litter for climbing gear so we usually use Petzl or Black Diamond Harnesses. The Ranger seat comment was more of a joke..If you want to see someone completely uncomfortable their first time out....tie their harness onto them with a short piece of rope that you pretend to have "just found" in your bag...Be sure to mention "this should do the trick"....and watch them start to cry..

How does he get free stuff? I can rent and borrow equipment from my school, but climbing gear is pricey, especially quality stuff.
Something I notice, is that when people are beginning to climb, as soon as they fall they grab onto the rope atached to their harness (not the case in lead climbing, but where I worked we never let new climbers lead climb) as if they thought the knot would come undone.

He is in the Navy. He gets so much shit for free it makes me sick. Almost everything in Dick's sporting goods is 45% off using his government credit card..

Yeah we usually only top rope..keep enough tension so they might only fall 1 or 2 feet...

He and I might (on occasion) Solo some of the smaller formations..
He is a bit off his rocker--and decided to free solo a single pitch because we forgot to rig the belay before we trekked around. Personally, I would never do this, as I am fond of life...

Is he some type of high speed sailor that he gets all that free climbing gear? Because I'm considering joining the military to pay off some student loans and free stuff like climbing gear might just tip the scales.
At any rate, I would've thought somebone who served "of their own accord" would be more likely to get and use free climbing gear than a sailor stuck on a ship.

Since I am out , I have no access to gear. I have recieved a few "gifts" from friends, and have a pretty nice collection.

He on the other hand, is active..and spends little to no time "on float".
