...BUT the reason he's in all these awesome wars is that he's only slightly better than the competition (and in his last fight, slightly worse, if you ask me).

What do you make of that? The only other UFC champ I can think of who has won but didn't really seem dominant is Bendo. Is it because LW AND WW are so stacked? Or are we just waiting for the next superstar to emerge who will just lock that shit down for a bit?

He's not incredibly dominant but he gets the job done and does so in exciting fashion. That's all a fan can ask. Plus welterweight is an absolute shark tank.

That's just how it goes at the highest levels of MMA these days. Unless they bring Palhares in to start pulling guard and hobbling everyone, WW is gonna remain tightly contested for the forseeable future. Anyone can beat anyone, anyone can lose to anyone.

Goes back since before Lawler too. St. Pierre survived Condit and Hendrix by the skin of his teeth. Hendrix only barely edged Lawler, and then vice versa... on on with Rory and Condit since then... and probably on to Wonderboy and Woodley. Considering they'll likely keep protecting Robbie from Maia, Palhares, etc, we're not gonna see much change in that pattern for a while.

Welterweight has always been like this outside of GSP. It's a very tough division. Anyone in that top group is capable of beating another.

I wonder what it'll take to stand out in the division? I remember how deep LHW looked when Rashad beat Forrest for the belt, then it looked like "The Machida Era" was upon us until Shogun came and snatched that shit up.

Then, almost out of nowhere, Bones came in and just flat out took over.

Does anyone in the WW division look like they could be ready for a takeover?

Wonderboy?

Considering how long Robbie has been int the game he is doing
absolutely phenomenal I would say

The division is hotly contested and likely will continue to be so in the future.

Maybe Robbie is taking some time off now because to the wars which I don;t begrudge him.

Hope to see him and GSP dance...
or Woodley or Maia

Bones all of a sudden made a very tough stacked division look weak...
with how dominant he is...

I think you are overrating Palhares a bit.

Of course he's one dimensional, and there's a good chance of him just getting fucked up on the feet by a killer like Robbie, Condit, Rory, Wonderboy, etc.

But, he gets his arms around any one of those guys and pulls guard, does some of that flying scissor shit, whatever, kiss them feet goodbye.

Maybe. Alan Belcher knew what he was getting into so he prepared and actually beat Rousimar on the ground. If Alan can do it I have faith that most of the top WW's could do it as well.

Maybe... Lawler, Condit etc aren't dumb. I know they'd be ready... but, shit, so was shields lol. Toqinho 2.0 is so much improved.

Maybe because he doesnt lay on you and hump your leg like the former longtime welterweight champ!

He is no doubt, but when you are facing Jake Shields you know he wants to get it on the ground where he himself would prefer submissions over GnP. Palhares would never survive shots from Carlos or Robbie unless he resorted to eye gouging again.

I'm just glad to see a few of the judges are more willing to give nods to the fighters who, you know, actually come to fight. Lawler being the prime example.

I don't see Maia having anything for Robbie. Robbie is a strong dude and I don't see Maia getting him to the ground without being tagged. But I'm terrible at this sort of thing. That's why I don't gamble.

Robbie is the man, you're damn right. I cheered for Rory and I cheered for Condit when they fought him, but I didn't cheer against him either. He's a hard man not to like. I'm glad that he's champ because he brings the ruckus and makes it a war every time. But he has been hanging on by a thread, and soon he'll meet someone with scissors. Unless Rory stops him, it's going to be Wonderboy.

I have always been a fan of Robbie, but he just scrapes by. I became a huge Nick Diaz fan when he disposed of Robbie.
I'm glad he got the belt and was able to defend it.
Quite an accomplishment.

Robbie being such a beast is both a blessing and a curse for him. With his elite TDD, he is the stylistic nightmare for the kinds of fighters that used to give him so much trouble back in the day. But the fans and the UFC want to see him up against other aggressive strikers because everyone knows it'll make for epic fights.

Condit was a stylistic nightmare who didn't really deserve that title shot

He has a win over Hendricks Lawler and Rory. Who else can say that? Better yet, who else is capable of that? Those are as tough as they come at ww. Those are elite fighters.
