As Robbie Lawler sat on his stool after the third round of a championship fight against Johny Hendricks on Dec. 6, the words of his cornermen said it all.

Lawler, 32, was on the cusp of accomplishing something many used to think was a given, when he was a high school kid training out of Miletich Fighting Systems in Bettendorf, Iowa: winning a UFC title.

But after that third round at UFC 181, momentum wasn't on Lawler's side. He had come out and won the first frame, but lost the next two.

His longtime boxing coach, Matt Pena, kneeled in front of him and told him that after all these years, it had to be now. It had to happen in the next 10 minutes. His longtime mentor, Pat Miletich, ran around the outside of the cage and begged Lawler to let his hands go.

Lawler, ESPN's Fighter of the Year, listened -- especially in the final seconds. He tore into Hendricks as the fifth round closed in a performance that finally won him UFC gold.

"It's just been an amazing journey," Lawler said. "I've got a lot of guys behind me. Thanks to the fans. But this wasn't easy."

He had a good year but I though he lost to Hendricks both times.

I am glad he won but outside of Robbie's flurries at the beginning and end of the fight, the fight was awful.

WW seems to be the division where people fight reserved, once they get to the title fight.

Reading the tweets of fighter's reactions to the decision, there are a lot of dumb fighters when it comes to analyzing the fight. Perhaps it's bias.

Basically this. Going back, I actually thought the first fight was more closely disputed than the second,

Is this the first time that an MMA fighter won this award from ESPN? There are boxers in the category also correct?

EDIT: thought we were talking about the prestigious ESPN ESPY award. MMA fighters have been nominated but since 2007 when they started giving fighter of the year ESPY only Pac man and Mayweather have won

If you told 2-3 years ago that Lawler would have the strap and he fighter of the year I'd have called you crazy.

Anyone think the Militich cmap was holding him back?

First of all, what has Johnny Bedford done, besides being submitted and knocked out. Some people need to just know their place, and talking about who the Fighter of the Year is, is something Bedford needs to just sit back and take notes on what it takes to be a champ...

I just looked and I thought we were talking about ESPN award. I am pretty sure this thread is about ESPN's MMA live award.

The award I was talking about was the ESPY. Since 2007 when they started giving an ESPY for fighter of the year only Pac Man and MAyweather have won

    Same.

I like that the article makes it sound like Lawler let his hands go to take the last 2 rounds, when he held back until the last ten seconds of each round
