Seems that the English get sneered at for eating roast beef, but by God, what a wonderful dinner it is. 2kg of topside from waitrose (half price atm), served with Yorkies, roast Maris pipers, parsnips and a selection of vegetables and gravy. Everything home made, including the chicken stock that went into the gravy and the ale I made the yorkshires with.

Sexually, why on earth would anyone mock someone for making such a magnificent meal.

You can't beat roast beef, best roast meal ever.

BTW, where's your roast potatoes?

I've never in my life heard of anyone sneering over roast beef.

That's a pot roast, which I'm a big fan of, especially with brisket, but I did the topside smothered in oil, mustard, salt and a little brown sugar. 20 minutes at 200C, then 55 minutes at 150C (fan). 25 minutes to rest - beautifully pink and succulent. Kicking myself for not photographing it first, but family were moaning that I'd spent too long prepping the gravy so had to serve it up (before inhaling it all in 40 seconds).

Delighted by the +ve response so far though, perhaps I was mistaken by the sneering bit. Was under the impression that Roast Beef was one of the main examples of "bad" English cooking. Either way, dinner was splendid, as is the Malbec I'm glugging at the moment.

There was a restaurant here that served world famous roast beef. Magnans, it was called.

I kept meaning to go and when I finally tried, it had closed. The owner was the chef and when he retired he closed his restaurant because he didn't want anyone besmirching his good name.

One of the great disappointments in my life.

What's the difference between roast beef and pot roast? Is it just that one is cooked in the oven and the other on the stove?

Yeah, roast is done in the oven, direct heat, little or no added liquid other than some high smoke point fat, done in a roasting tray. Pot roast is usually a tougher cut of beef, done in a heavy lidded dish, cooked over the stove (or the whole thing is transferred to a medium heat oven) with cooking liquid, aromatics and vegetables, some of which will be added later during the cook. Pot roast times are a lot longer than regular roast beef times, though you can end up with quite dry (if tender) meat at the end of it.

The French call us Rosbifs, and I'm pretty sure they don't do it as a compliment (the frog-eating bastards).

Who gives a shit what the french have to say. They would be eating kraut and brats if it wasnt for our grand daddies any way

I feel your pain. That sounds deeply tragic, though I have huge respect for the chef in question.

Anybody who besmirches roast beef ain't no friend of mine!
