I have an Inverted Gear gi that I have used for about a year now. The ripstop on the collar and the pants is starting to wear out now. The rest of the gi is completely fine. Is this common to ripstop collars and pants in general? Or is this an issue with the kind of ripstop used?

I've got some rips in my atama mundials but they are like 4-5 years old

Honestly, Mood, I think ripstop sucks. It's cool that it's lightweight and dries quickly, but it wears out way faster than anything else. As pants, I don't mind it so much. But on collars? I think other cotton variations are way better than ripstop. Twill, denim, duck canvas, canvas, or whatever else is out there seems to be far more durable.

I had a CTRL Supreme Standard (1st batch). It was one of my favorite gis. I loved the navy blue accents and stitching. More importantly, I loved the fit of the gi. That A2T fit amazingly well. I loved that gi so much I actually wore it as little as possible. I owned it for 1 year, but only used it 4 times. Right after the 4th wash, the collar collapsed completely. I replaced it with the Blue Supreme, which does not have a ripstop collar. I can tell you right now that this gi is built like a tank, and that collar will probably last longer than any of my other gis.

The only ripstop collar in my gi collection that hasn't started to fray even after repeated abusing is from my Killer Bee Ligustica. I don't know what it is about their materials, but KB makes seriously heavy-duty gis.

Then again, a year of constant usage may be the limit for some gis. I don't know.

Abiwankinobi, I think a gi should last longer than a year. Any gi really unless it is a cheap, flimsy student gi that costs $40 or so. All bjj gis are above that price point and I think 2 years use is reasonable to expect.

I am unimpressed with how the ripstop is wearing out quicker than the rest of the gi. I would consider getting another Inverted Gear gi but I am not sure at this point. I will see how the ripstop wears on my other gis before I decide if it is the material in general that is not lasting.

do you put it in the dryer after each use? i have been using a ripstop kingz 420v2 gi and the whole thing is ripstop, and that thing is tough as nails.

Yes. I dry my gis on low for about 20 minutes. They always come out of the dryer still wet and then I hang dry to finish the process.
