Is this/are these something everyone gets training in grappling? I'd never had any, but didn't play sports or wrestle in HS. I've been trying 3 different schools, 2 weeks @ each and now I'm set. Fun for the whole family? Is this just going to be a way of life now that I'm a 'grappler.' Just wondering. Bought wrestling shoes, just so I wouldn't give it to anyone else. This sucks. Thanks.

-Edited cuz I have a suck keyboard

For me it seems to be a way of life, I get it it goes away, comes back, beginning to be a real pain in my ass. I wash my gi everyday in bleach, I shower with anti bacterial soap after each class. I guess I will be stuck battling this all my life!

Read what you wrote again.. I dont understand it all.

Jock itch, athletes foot.. happens to us all, everyone i know in bjj has had it at one time or another. this stuff is coming from you not being a clean person, and also from your teamates. To help with this bring an extra pair of shorts, towl, and pair of flip flops to practice with you. When you get done.. take off the wet pants/shorts dry your self off(between the toes too) and put on clean dry ones, as well as flip flops so your feet stay dry. When you driving home put on the Foot/Head air conditioning in your car so your feet dont continue to sweat. If your having problems with it just go get some Tough actin Tinactin and it will clear it up. Your enemy is wetness. I noticed i was getting jock itch because i would walk out of practice with my gi pants on .. and get in my car and drive home which was an hour, then get out and go take a shower.

I havent had it for a long time now, and my solution in the morning classes is a beach bum shower. After practice i put on board shorts, fill up a gallon of water in the sink, and pour it over my entire self.. like a shower w/out soap. Then i dry off.. put on clean clothes and go to work. If we had showers, i would just take one, but since we dont.. i have to improvise.
Another method is rubbing down with Anti bacterial hand sanitizer.. but i still dont feel clean after that.

Wearing wrestling shoes to me is just funny. Nothing makes me smile more to see a guy in a bjj gi and a pair of wrestling shoes. But do what you like.. To me it is kind of rude when you have shoes on and you step on someone, or touch their face, or anything like that.. not that the feet are much better.. but atleast its not shoes. In wrestling its fine because you dotn have guys constantly going for armlocks or returning guard where the feet come near the face.

Sorry if my post was confusing. Short re-cap: I've never had AF/JI before, but since I've been visiting a couple of different schools (to decide where I'm going to train), I caught the itch. Not sure where I got, but I wanted to know if I should get used to having it. My doc said it was worth the discomfort to practice and that it would probably come back again.

Good call on the wetness factor, I was wearing my wet shorts home from practice. Will fix that. But I had to catch it from someone, right? I train no-gi, so it's not AS funny to see me in wrestling shoes, I suppose. But I was trying to be considerate of my partners and the instructor said it was fine. I take them off when I leave the mat and put them on before getting on it. So, I don't think it's any more gross than bare feet...or is it? Who knows? Thanks for the words of advice.

Truth is you can get it even if you are clean. If you have grubby team mates then you're fucked.

Your instructors should be booting people off the mat if they don't wash their gis, washing down the mats on a regular basis, etc. Imagine my horror when I went to Brazil and noticed Brazilians are lucky if they wash their gis once every few days.... :(

If you've got a clean mat, clean body, clean-ish gear, and a clean team, you probably won't get it.

I contracted impetigo once from a dirty wrestler. That shit snuck up on me and hit me hard overnight. I had sores on my chest, shoulders, and back. I ALWAYS showered very well after practice and kept my gear clean. Sometimes getting a skin bug just happens, but it should not be anything to worry about, and many guys NEVER get it.

you will get it. yes it sucks. it seems to come and go.
the worst so far was staph infection i caught. had to go to the doctor and get cut open

Just make sure the place you're going is washing the mats every day. One place I went to had a puzzle mat room and a ring room. The canvas on the ring hadn't been cleaned since its creation and it was used for grappling and boxing every day. I don't think the puzzle mats, also used for kwon do, had been cleaned either... It was Fing disgusting.

I got ringworm once, it didn't go away for about a month

As long as your school cleans the mats regularly, you clean your gi after class, wash your stuff, and take showers after class you should be alright

So what do you do if you're starting to get some AF? Still go to class? Tape ot up some how? I'm starting to get it for the first time since starting class, an I'd like to stop it from getting worse.

Spray that shit down with Lamisil and quit training until it's gone

This might be worth a try, but I use rubbing alcohol after rolling because home is another 1 hour travel, but see to it that I do shower when I get home. Hope I don't get those you mentioned as my school seem not washing the mats. :icon_chee

Does Rubbing Alcohol Kill Ringworm? | eHow.com

Rubbing alcohol is terrible for your skin and not as effective as over the counter antifungal medication

my purpose is prevention, not treatment. Been using rubbing alcohol since high school after every sports. So far no bad effects on my skin. :)

Dude, you should try to stay clean and wash your shit as much as possible BUT...if you keep doing BJJ for any serious length of time your gonna get it eventually.

i managed to go my first 2 years without getting it...now it seems like i catch that shit once every 6 months to a year

Lamisil works best IMO...if you catch it really early you can get rid of it in 3 days sometimes
