Ridley Scott to Direct Revenge Western WRAITHS OF THE BROKEN LAND

Ridley Scott, Drew Goddard and Simon Kinberg, the team behind last year's hit sci-fi drama The Martian, are reuniting for a revenge-fueled Western.

Twentieth Century Fox has picked up the right to Wraiths of the Broken Land, a book by S. Craig Zahler, the author turned filmmaker (Bone Tomahawk), The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Scott is attached to direct, Goddard will write the script, and Kinberg will produce. Goddard and Scott will also produce.

The 2013 book was set in 1900 in Mexico, with two sisters kidnapped and forced into prostitution. Her two brothers and father set out to find them, bringing along their outlaw gang that includes a former slave, a bird brain-eating Indian girl, and a brutal gunman. It has been described as having elements of horror, pulp and Asian ultra-violence.

This sounds very promising. With The Martian, Ridley Scott shows he still got it as long as the script is also up to par. And him reteaming with The Martian team is even more encouraging.

Plus, this is from a S. Craig Zahler novel. So if you liked the slow-burn western thriller Bone Tomahawk, you might want to check this out in the future.

Sounds like fun. I like the plot and character sketches.

Oh god... that's what Ridley Scott looks like?? Fuuckk I always pictured some nerdy guy like JJ Abrams... this sucks :/

wow sounds awesome.

They had me at "former slave, bird-brain-eating Indian girl, and brutal gunman."

Great team behind this and I'm always on board for good westerns in this day and age since they are few and far between. Loved the 3:10 to Yuma and True Grit remakes more than the originals.

Now they just got to get a solid cast involved. Wouldn't mind seeing Damon involved in it since he has the western experience under his belt and just worked with these guys on The Martian.

Oh shit, if the guy who wrote & directed Bone Tomahawk wrote this movie, that's secretly the most exciting part of this news. That movie was awesome.

I intentionally didn't put the "horror" tagline when describing Bone Tomahawk in case you would be reading this. ;)

Lulz. Meanwhile, I often make the case that Se7en is a horror movie. So go figure that one out.

Yep. Always up for a good western. The Magnificent Seven remake looks fun.

I'm hoping Timothy Olyphant joins this one. He was originally set to star in Bone Tomahwak but he left due to scheduling conflicts. His role went to Matthew Fox, who did an excellent job with it.

What is pulp?
Pulp - 1. Popular or sensational writing that is generally regarded as being of poor quality. 2. Movie, Book, or other type of publication with lurid subject matter, such as crime. Often shocking subjects portrayed as non-shocking. Synonyms: trashy, cheap, sensational, lurid, tasteless
