Biggin' up the support for local (Coatbridge, Scotland) lad Ricky Burns tonight against Joseph Laryea.

WAR BURNS!!

Looking forward to the fight tonight, Burns isn't really a world beater, but he's a solid fighter and he seems a nice enough guy.

Dunno much about Laryea, but a quick look at his record tells you he's lost every time he's come against someone with a half-decent record, with the notable exception of his last fight.

Uh, better than Ken Buchanan? Seriously, you want to argue that?

Lol i saw an article where Burns said that after a couple fights he would be the Scottish GOAT. I just posted it to see what responses i'd get, that's all.

It was his trainer that made the Scottish GOAT statement not Burns himself

He did OK tonight, but Laryea was looking good in the early rounds. It wasn't obvious why Laryea had retired until after the fight when he was pointing at his hand, but it explained why he was so gun shy in that last round. Pity, as it was shaping up to be a pretty good fight.

Was there live, but was a bit surprised at how many people didn't even bother watching any of the fights until the main event. Some decent boxers were on the undercard too.

It seems to be in Scotland, people here are trying to attach themself to the burns name. "I train with burns" "i drink with burns in the pub" "ii went to schoo with burns", so tend to only show up for him. This isn't bad for Ricky, he's got alot of support etc, but they don't like or understand the sport. DeGale on the undercard is a great spectacle in itself.

Burns done well, was watching in the pub and didn't hea why Laryea gave up, so it looked a bit pathetic, but a broken knuckle, ouchy.

He's a good boxer, but he's not going to go down as one of the greatest of all time by any stretch of the imagination.

It was an OK performance from Burns but nothing more. It's basically the type of show we'd have expected from him before his fight of a lifetime to beat Martinez. You have to consider how good Joseph Laryea is as well... and the answer is not particularly. He was 14-4 coming in and 4-3 in his last 7. It's not as if he'd been taking on top level opposition either; the 3 loses were to the best fighters he faced and 3 of the wins were against scrubs. What got him the title fight was him scraping a win against the decent domestic contender Paul Appleby.

Some people are talking about Burns taking on the other big guns in the division: notably a unification bout with Fana. I just don't see it. It would be a great fight... Burns showed in the Martinez bout that at his best he can compete with anyone but appears to take his foot off the pedal against lesser boxers. Instead I think Burns continue to feast on domestic, European and Commonwealth level opposition in what can best be described as a Warren special.
