Ricci Looked REALLY Out Of Shape

He did not look good at all in the Dom Waters fight. Colton Smith was the perfect opponent to break him. I really think Colton was underestimated quite a bit. He's trickier than most with his clinch takedowns. If Ricci couldn't keep him away, I knew Colton was going to break him.

This.

Pretty boys like Ricci can't handle constant pressure and being smothered - not by their moms and definitely not by a staff sergeant in the US army.

Colton had the perfect style to give Ricci fits. I'm kind of surprised that people saw Ricci as a 3-to-1 favourite. Does Ricci have the more well-rounded game? Sure. Was Ricci working on his craft & gameplanning with one of the best camps in the world? Of course.

Does it mean that a pretty boy could withstand the relentless pressure of a guy who will clinch up and stick to you like glue, looking for any trip/drag/throw/push/grind possible to take away your gameplan of spacing and impose his? I guess people bought the TriStar 'ype.

Did Florian really say that? Source?

I believe someone quoted Florian as saying that... Maybe it was at the weigh-in show. I don't recall exactly when... But it was definitely said and definitely a ridiculous statement.

I think a fight like this reminds everyone how important a base is. Training just MMA from a young age sounds like it's the future, but being well rounded is great, but when you run into a great pure wrestler or a striker with good tdd. You often find yourself at a tremendous disadvantage.

So pretty much what your saying is that your base must be wrestling?

Not at all, I'm just saying that fans get caught up in the new breed, train everything from the start mentality, and you often find yourself at a disadvantage against someone with a pure base. JDS has no wrestling base, but he has really good tdd and is a specialist on the feet.

And honestly, I'm not convinced that Ricci is really better all around. Ricci has better standup? Sure. Obviously Colton has the wrestling. I also give Colton the edge in the clinch and in overall grappling. He had positional dominance throughout. Factor in the strength and cardio edge to Colton, and Ricci is actually not as well rounded.

I think the biggest factor is that Ricci is used to fighting 155 pound fighters. Colton was just too strong and relentless

I really don't see the argument your making. Jds is great because he is well rounded. Ricci lost because he isn't well rounded enough. So just because Ricci isn't specializing in something doesn't mean he is too well rounded.

Colton wasn't simply muscling Ricci. His technique in the clinch and with his greco is solid. I said this prior to the fight - he's a lot trickier than he gets credit for.

I'm probably not being clear as it's very early still lol. All i'm saying is that a base to build off of is still very important in mma compared to training all aspects of mma equally from the start.

Ricci cant really use size as an excuse, Smith is hardly massive, he'll drop to LW IMO - imagine him trying to dothat to say, Jon Fitch for example. WW is too big and burly for him.

Ricci was disappointing.

Yeah I was really disappointed with Ricci. That sucked to see.

He looked like he wasn't aware that there was a thing called wrestling you were supposed to know how to do when cagefighting.
