The best thing the UFC could do is open a 165lb division and also stop the double champ fights.

It would alliviete the top 10 bottleneck of 155.

They could put on even more stacked events as 165 and 155 top 10s could fight on the same card with title implications.

What is the downside?
Why the hell isnt the UFC pushing this?
Am I missing something....e.g., would this be watering things down?

It messes things up for WW.

Woodley is the 170 champ.
175 or 165 would be brand new titles that would have to be contested.

Anyone who wants to fight at 165 so badly should fight at 170.
C’mon, it’s 5 lbs.

165 just ruins 155 and 170 which are the best 2 divisions in MMA.
Instead of adding 165 and creating a 175 just remove 205 and the 265+ limit.

If guys fought at their actual weight more classes would make sense but what's the point currently when people will still heavily cut into 165 and bully the competition?

It would be filled with gatekeepers from both divisions
Possibly but some of those gatekeepers would shine there and look like world beaters.

Not gatekeepers but ppl getting looked over like Poirier and Tony would benefit the most. It’ll open up from the waiting for a Conor fight vs waiting for title shot madness at 155. As it stands at 155 it’s like 2 parallel goals, title shot or fight Conor $$$.

As far as gatekeeper type fighters Lee, Barbosa, Cowboy, and Gaethje would also benefit and some of the smaller welterweights might drop down and make waves there.

I honestly don’t think it’s needed tbh
It would be a mess

155 and 170 are fine...
No they arent. Each division has multiple guys on 5-6-7-8 fight winning streaks and are not only unranked, but they can't even get a ranked opponent.

This isn't 2010 anymore when they had 40 guys in each division on the roster. Now each division has 80-90!

165 & 175 have already been adopted by the CSAC.

On NUMEROUS occasions Dana has said this weight class is not happening, what is it you guys and fighters who STILL talk are not grasping???

Want in one hand and shit in the other
See which one gets filled first

Woodley would be perfect for 175. 165 would be ideal to RDA, Colby, Cerrone.

Nah a lot of those 170 monsters can't get to 165, add pounds and you become a small guy ala rda or cowboy

Think they just killed anything with that division not making Khabib vs St Pierre… but could just be saving it to hit one last huge Mcgregor PPV.
