People often mention this fight as a knock on Lewis' legacy. I think the inexplicably biased HBO team contributed to this misconception. Lennox did come into the fight out of shape, no doubt about it but he was clearly finding his groove as the fight wore on. It is questionable whether he would have finished Vitali but his superior skill set began to show itself by the time the cut stoppage occurred imho. Vitali is more lucky than he or the HBO team would like to admit.

    Thoughts?

Vitali is lucky he didn't get Lennox in his prime.

Lennox was essentially retired prior to this fight and was supposed to be fighting Kirk Johnson.

Anyone that says this isn't a legit TKO win for Lewis is foolish.

This fight did not hurt either fighters legacy.

When Larry Merchant has a hard on for a fighter he uses his line of interview questions as an thin veiled verbal assault. Its so unprofessional.

I don't see how stopping someone who people are now calling great is a knock on anyone's legacy except people parroting the bs at esb.

Lol, Lennox stopped him by TKO. Punches busted up Vitali, he lost (a long time ago), time to move on.

It never crossed my mind that Lennox left the ring as the winner. He was declared the winner, but he was losing the fight clearly. Lennox had no clue how to deal with Vitali and he knew he'd lose the rematch. I agree though that there needs to be come type of closure, it was just a boxing match, Lennox wasn't obligated to box anyone. But it tells something about him and the way he handled the post-fight interview also shows his arrogance and exaggerated opinion of himself.

"I know in this fight when doctor don't stop, I win this fight" - Unforgettable.

He probably was behind on points but the momentum of the fight had begun to shift by the time of the stoppage. Lewis had the measure of him and would have put that iron chin of his to the test had the fight continued.

I think Vitali was catious in round 6 due to the cut. It was a messy round, Lennox landed a nasty uppercut. But I'd still give that round to Vitali.

If it wasn't for the cut, I doubt that Lennox would've came up with anything magnificent in the following rounds. His legs would've crumbled after a cold right from Vitali or he would've lost a decision by wide margin - one of the two.
Lennox definitely showed heart in that fight, same as Vitali. I think Vitali should've gone for the knockout more, but it's easy to talk when you're not in the ring.

Dr Pillowfists wasn't knocking out Lennox with a bat. He was spent, whipped, and knew he couldn't put any aggression in with risking Lennox jabbing his eye out.

Vitali would have continued to beat him on the scorecards till the end even if it would have made him look like a jacked up terminator.

The doc saved no one but Lewis.

That was basically what lead to that messy round 6.
But as far as "Dr. Pillowfists" goes (speaking of haters who talk big and bad out of the ring) - Vitali's heavy hands were the main reason that the physical shape Lennox was in became visable.

Put Lennox and Vitali in the ring when they're both in their prime and Lennox wins easily.

    That's all that counts.

Lennox is the last of the great heavyweights.

    Vitali doesn't have heavy hands.

    The doctor didn't save Lewis.

The hate is strong in this thread.

Don't quote KO ratios either. He breaks people down he doesn't have dynamite in his hands.

I said that Lennox showed heart.

Never said he has dynamite, but you mentioned pillows.

It's a joke people use against him calling himself Ironfist.
