Revised powerlifting classification chart

They lowered the lower weight classes to reflect the national rankings, but I think they went too far. I understand that these are "drug free" standards, but they still seem too low.

I don't like this list in the least. The numbers seem relatively low.

Are the two feds that you mentioned Keo the only ones that are changing? All the other feds will still be using the old numbers right?

Those schmucks bumped my elite total up 36lbs!!! Ahh well. That will make it all the more awesome and hard-earned when I get there.

You think the men's Elite 198-242 totals seem low for a drug free lifter?

Don't know if anyone noticed, but the new raw powerlifting "classifications" came out. http://www.rawpowerlifting.com/classifications.htm I still think the lower weight class elite totals are way too low, but overall the new chart's an improvement. Discuss.

I used to compete in the 123lb and 132 lb class and I think those numbers are on the low side.My squat and deadlift were close to the top but my bench would have been way down.Definately should have been higher.

it says elite likely puts you top 10...i dunno about that lol (for 165)

Yeah I do. Then again my opinion isn't worth much.

EDIT: I just looked at 198. I didn't look at the 220 or 242 class.

Shit I need to work on my strict curl

The numbers do seem low if you use the elite definition they provide... "An exceptional lifter, for males this means the lifter is very likely in the top 10 in the nation for their respective weight class and the lifter may be close to a top 5 ranking among comparable federations for that competition year."

I don't have access to the yearly top 50 numbers, but if you look at the all-time (collected since 2007), they elite totals seem more like top 50. In some cases (see 198's) they are not even top 50. They are actually closer to top 100. These totals more meet the definition of a master lifter.

strict curl?

is that website trolling me? i literally laughed out loud. hard.

Curling is legit. Powerlifting started out as "odd lifts", and many times they had curls as one of the competition lifts. Old school strongmen did a lot of curls too. Some feds are trying to bring back curls (NASA, 100% RAW, etc). I don't think it is a bad thing, but I really don't curl a whole lot since I do the normal powerlifts.

Agree.

Yes.

I am middle-aged, 17% of my skeleton has been put back together, I have osteoarthritis and damage to my CNS from cerebral malaria. On a bad day I am well over the elite total for 220. (current raw total: 1660 vs. 1587 "elite" standard). And yeah, drug-free numbers.

And my bench sucks.

A younger, healthier athlete should do much better than me. Many do. I am no longer an elite lifter in the open category. Or at least I should not be.

"Elite simply means very good."

From the description below. Apparently elite does not mean what it used to mean. Or, the way you keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Master of the strict curl.

Fuck yeah.

Federations have their own systems and there's no real consensus. Most people buy into the regularly cited numbers from a few years ago, and those are the closest thing to an agreed-upon ranking as there is. Because we have no real governing body, everyone and their mother has a definition for Elite.

If anyone's interested, I posted the averages for the top ten current lifters in each weight class in my training log. Though that list contains lifters who are using knee wraps and aren't drug free, it is substantially higher, sometimes 200+ lbs. higher. These numbers will likely get you into the top 50 in any weight class, but they might not take you much higher.
