Review of Robb Wolf's nutrition seminar

Cool review; I'd love to take in a seminar. I've still got my fingers crossed that he decides to do one when he's in my area this summer.

Couple of thing I found interesting:

Neolithic - Robb explained the Neo foods and why they are so bad for you. Biggest thing I got from this was that bread has to be eliminated. It is the number one cause for most inflammatory diseases. Interestingly enough he actually likes wheat bread the least. If I remember correctly, this is because the wheat germ is especially destructive on the GI and just causes more irritation. Point taken was if you are going to eat bread, eat white bread.

I'm surprised he'd even suggest that at all. Interesting concept on the wheat germ, though. I bet this ties into Celiac disease in some form.

Paleo cultures - Robb spoke a bit about various cultures. Interesting notes, Indians on the plains who ate primarily Buffalo, blueberries and tubers were on par in health with Olympic athletes and most males had a 2.5-3x BW deadlift. Also, on average native culture's diets are 25-30% Protein, 20-25% carb and 30-40% fat.

Now, I had to laugh at this. How the fuck on earth could a statement like this ever be confirmed? I'm picturing a native American male in a loincloth and headress deadlifting 4 plates a side in the middle of a buffalo herd. I'd like to see the source of this statement, lol.

Never saw that lol. I would like to see it too

Whoa...wait a minute...now white bread is supposedly better than whole wheat? Now I have to go research this. I don't even really eat much bread...maybe once a week for my tuna sandwiches but still...this is interesting. What about white rice vs brown then?

I had no idea it could be bad for you. I read up on it a little and learned most whole wheat bread contains high fructose corn syrup or other BS ingredients like hydrogenated oils, enriched wheat flour, etc..but that's usually the case with most generic grocery store products.

About eating white bread over whole wheat, do you guys agree with this? (assuming neither types of bread contain aforementioned ingredients)

Robb is a cool ass guy. He lives here in Chico. I went to him a couple times for help with my form on DLs and Squats. Really knowledgable but I couldnt afford to work with him but a couple times. I wanted to get my girlfriend in his crossfit classes, but at $160/mo with a year contract we had to decide otherwise.

Does anyone here subscribe to the performance menu? I saw a couple issues and looked good, i think he has recipes in every issue. I havnt tried any though.

I have a subscription to it, in exchange for articles. Granted I am severely behind on that, and I owe them lol.

I think it is a awesome publication. Nutrition, strength, health and longevity, etc, it has a wealth of information. Most of the recipes are very good. Mike subscribes as well I believe.

As for the white bread etc. Don't get all worked up guys. Each nutrition expert is going to have different ideas and proof of things etc. Everyone is off their rocker a bit when they find a way that works. But Robb is one of the smartest and coolest guys I know. I am sure he has paper references to back up everything he talked about.

Cool. Thanks Vedic. I agree with what you are saying...like I said, I dont really eat much bread...I do buy whole wheat though when I do buy some and I do go with some Italian bread for a nice hoagie, :)

I don't eat a lot of bread, pretty much never. But every now and then I kill a panini.

Once im not so broke im going to get a subscription to The Perfomance Menu I think.

Some of my friends are/were talking to Robb about starting an Olympic Lifting team here in Chico. It sucks to have someone like Robb here but be too broke to work with him. Hopefully they will work something out and restart the Chico State OL team.

PM Journal is solid. With guys like Robb wolf on nutrition and Greg Everett on Oly lifting, I look forward to it every month. I get both PM Journal and the Crossfit Journal, and even though there's a fair number of Rippetoe articles in the CF journal, I think I'm going to dump it once my subscription runs out.

It's not the HFCS he's referring to...it's the grains themselves. Robb has written extensivley on the downside of grain consumption and chronic disease. A few other blogs I subscribe to, like Hyperlipid, Heart Scan Blog, and Dr. Briffa's are also along this line of thinking. Mainstream society is just BARELY coming around to the idea of fat being healthy and essential in the diet...start telling people that whole grains are bad, and there'll be mass riots. As with peanuts/peanut oil, it's the lectins that cause so much havoc, being associated with inflammtory bowel issues, among other things. There's a complex explanation involving glycoproteins, agglutination, and autoimmune dysfunction (as with Celiac disease/gluten intolerance), but that's about as much as I know. I'm sure Robb explans it in more detail on his website.

The case of the white bread over whole wheat, he's probably eluding to the fact the white flour has been bleached/processed enough so there's no lectin content. In that regard, it would be better than whole wheat, but the GI would be ungodly sky high.

Robb is the man. Especially on nutrition topics.

Eating whole wheat bread is like eating low fat oreos - bullshit justification for a bad habit.

Regarding the DL comment, they had to carry shit some how and most cultures recorded events in one way or another. It's not a stretch to estimate typical strength based on typical events of moving pray, lodgings, boats, etc.

LOL I don't buy it at all. I just can't see a guy weighing in at a lean 170 Dl'ing 510 without actually training for it. That statement is ridiculous. I think Robb just said it to see if anyone would catch it. :icon_chee

LOL! I hardly eat bread now, but I would never eat processed white bread over wheat bread.

I'm not buying Quinoa is bad for you either. I would stick to eating it post workout.

Lol, I love it when people only read, what they want to read. As I said before. If I talk to Lee he is going to tell me one way to eat. Lyle would tell me to eat a different way, as would Kim, as would Alan, as would Robb. Off of the top of my head those are the five most intelligent people I know on nutrition. Point being. One is Paleo, one is Zone type, one is neither here nor there, and the other is a mixture. All coming to numerous ideas off of numerous schools of thought.

Bread, do I eat it? Not really, when I do it's a Panini sandwich once a month. Now if you are only eating bread once or twice a month. Why does it matter if it's wheat or white? To me it doesn't. Point being, we all have different ideas, doesn't mean anyone is wrong really.

Quinoa. I can see his reasoning, but again for me I rarely touch it if ever, so it won't matter much. Some camps will endorse it, some will be against it. Same old same old.

So in the end you take things for what they are worth. Bruce Lee always said "absorb what is useful, disgard that which is not" same with nutrition. Do I like paleo? Sure, am I a paleo nazi? Nope, same with zone, veganism etc.

Smart eating is smart eating, splitting hairs is what gets everyone riled up, and it sells. IE, WMS, CEE, etc etc.:icon_lol:
