My wrestling coach used to tie some giant rubber bands around our waist and to a pole and we would practice our shots with resistance. Does anyone have an idea where bands that could be used like this can be bought online as well as bands fighters use to punch with resistance?

What you are looking for are called Thera-Bands:

The color you want is the gold color -- it has the highest resistance.

Using bands in that way is questionable. Adding resistance to movement specific to the sport has often been shown to ruin the motor unit recruitment pattern. They tried training sprinters with parachutes trailing behind them with disastrous results. Really messed them up.
