What I don't understand is why are Repubs set on cutting their bread and butter base? If they cut Medicaid and eventually Social Security they are just openly giving ground to the left that they hate so much. The remaining Republican base would be religious people, veterans and millionaires/billionaires. You can't win significant races with just those 3 groups.
