Modern MMA is chess where strategies and counter strategies are of upmost importance. Talent and fight IQ only takes you so far.

It's a miracle that Yan made it to a split decision basically without having any coaching. The rematch will be his easily.

I don't know who they were, but he did have people in his corner. They were telling him not to give his back to Aljo

Just reading about it now. Looks like his coaches were denied VISAs into the US so he recruited corners. One guy he tried to recruit was Cejudo, but Cejudo ended up turning him down. With all the Khamzat talk, I guess I really didn’t pay much attention.

I don't think corners matter THAT much typically, but considering how close this was I wonder if they would've affected the outcome

What could they have said to change though? In hindsight he should've worked more in the first round, but he always give away the first round so at the time they wouldn't have said that, other than that he did well outside of giving his back up in the 2nd and 3rd, what could the corners have said to stop those back takes?

I did get the feeling that he understood very very little of what the ATT guy was telling him in English between rounds. And there was very little translating going on.

I had the fight 1,4,5 Yan. But it’s his own stupid fault for habitually turning his back to try and get up immediately. When you repeatedly do the same thing, that’s ingrained in you. And no amount of coaches telling you not to Between rounds, is going to stop that.

Is that why he didn’t knee Aljo in the head a few times in the 4th and 5th round?

Shitty excuse.
22 takedown attempts. Mostly doubles or singles. More and more naked as the bout went on. Probability alone suggests you should be able to intercept one with a knee or uppercut. Even an NFL-style Punt to the dome would suffice.

Even a near miss might have made Aljo think twice about spamming takedown attempts.

Alright. So he got team which is unable to handle things like that. Maybe he should have basic shit together before next titlefight.

It's a thing, but not that much of a thing...

Lmfao ..

Yes the same coaches who apparently told him to knee in the first fight...LOL... that clearly would of made the difference in the 2nd fight...ur right T.S

Yan will never be champion again for the simple fact cheaters never prosper

Good for him, he had better corners this time -- last time they LOST him a fight he was clearly winning.

He had the same Brazilian MMA coach from his first fight. That is the guy telling him not to give his back when he stands up. It's the dude from ATT. I think Yan ignored him totally though. The other Russian guy talked over him in the corner.

didn't he have months to prepare for that? why didn't he get his shit together? it's not like he was fighting for a title or anything...

besides his corner was the one telling him to knee Aljo in the first fight.

Did you lose money by chance?

How many fights did Khabib have without his dad? He still had Javier. But countless fighters have had to fight without their coach/corner for myriad reasons.

It’s just another excuse. The tears are aging like great booze. A decade from now it will be exquisite.

How many fights did khabib have against top 5 fighters? The answer is 4

I'm not looking for excuses, but as you say(I think) fine margins are where coaches cornering can really make that difference imo... In terms of how could he have been coached I think pacing and placing his shots would have helped a lot, on the ground his sub defence was top notch, as was his ability to stagnate any progressive submission/transition to flattening out from Aljo, perhaps with the right coaching cage side they could have helped his urgency to get up/out with some clever scrambling... Just shooting my thoughts, who knows :)
