I remember Goldie, Rogan (sort of), and ALL OF SHERDOG said that TJ's success was credited to his apparent copying of Cruz' style.

Does this look like Cruz at all?

Cruz does a lot of feinting but lacks power in any of his shots. His whole game is based on evading strikes and looking pretty for the judges. Avoiding strikes doesn't equal points.

Also his boxing technique is inferior to TJ's boxing.

    Slaps don't equal punches.

Anyways if you don't want to go back and look at all their recent fights and study their styles, just look at their records.
    TJ: 16-3, 5 TKO/KOs in his last 7 wins
Cruz: 22-2, 1 KO in his last 7 wins

    I rest my case.

He did. The whole reason he started that was to imitate Cruz in the gym. Since then he's made it his own though.

Also if slaps don't equal punches why is Cruz so hard to work out if he isn't hurting people?

Cruz had a kind of new, odd style and TJ improved on it. Kind of like when Japan started making cars. They didn't innovate but they were more meticulous.

TJ is Domin8tor 3.0. Better in everyway, unless you consider looking pretty for the judges without offence.. which is actually a factor to the judges (see TJ vs Dom)

You can't deny that TJ's style is HEAVILY influenced by Dom.

I don't even think TJ would deny that. He mimicked Dom for several fights when Dom fought Uriah and Joe Benavidez.

Then TJ made it his own by adding more power. He is Dom 2.0 (like someone said above).

He didn't copy him exactly. And since then he has improved, TJ throws power shots and high kicks and also has a great killer instinct. Cruz does throw power, just much less frequent. But the footwork and usage of angles was similar. The similarities were def there. But the differences were actually the most clear when they fought each other. Still one of my favorite technical fights, and regardless of what anyone says, neither truly got the better of each other.

Yeah honestly their styles aren't that similar. It's just what people who don't know what they're watching like to say because they both incorporate a lot of movement into their fights.

Yes. Yes it does. The evasiveness, then lunging in from an odd angle looks textbook Cruz.

TJ's style was definitely inspired by Cruz, and heavily influenced his development, but to say that he is a copy of Cruz is pretty egregious.

The principles are the same. Use movement and feinting to find exploitable angles on your opponent. That's where the similarities end.

Dom is content to land potshots and retreat, racking up "significant strikes" over the fight. He'll also look for opportunistic takedowns once you're off balance chasing him. He never plants himself, and sacrifices power for elusiveness. This why his entire UFC and WEC career is full of decisions.

TJ wants to stay and exchange once he finds a favorable angle. He does plant down to throw, and thus his shots have significantly more power to them. He's in and out similar to Cruz, but when he goes in, he looks to land a heavy combination before exiting.

Add in TJ's prolific kicking ability, and yiu can really see the difference in style

People saw switch step resets and lateral movement and immediately went OMG HE'S COPYING CRUZ instead of just inferring that lateral movement is something every fighter can benefit from

They both are versatile on offensive and utilize lots of movement but other than that not much similarity and it's stupid to say TJ is copying Dom. It's like saying Rumble copied Rampage because they both like to stand in front of you and knock you out with punches

they don't really have that much in common and never understood the comparison. It seemed like a lazy one. TJ is more athletic but Dom is more committed to his defensive style.
