Per the UFC rankings, he is the #10 ranked LHW currently.

A Starbucks barista who was lucky enough to get in the UFC thanks to a hype attempt managed to crack the top 10 in the premier MMA organization in the world.

That means one of two things.

    1) Pat Cummins is really good. An MMA prodigy who was discovered by coincidence.

    2) The MMA/UFC talent pool is laughable.

Pat Cummins is 2x All American wrestler from Penn State including runner-up in 2004 and 2x national team member and has been training since 2010. He would have more pro fights but had a legal issue in 2011 due to a prank

He wasn't discovered by coincidence. He was an amateur stud and the UFC was already looking at him.

I like the guy - he'll never sniff a title shot (imo) but he's a great wrestler. He really needs to work on his striking though.

let us not forget he fought one guy who is a legit talent so far (after DC, of course).
Favorable matchups plus having the most judge-friendly style (wrestling) allows you to climb in rankings.
But in every fight, he never really shows improvement on his standup or ground game...

Don't think it will work well for him in the long run, against well rounded fighters.

    Lol it doesn't matter

You can be an elite wrestler all you want and it won't mean anythjng if you can't strike

Trust me this is from personal experience on and off the streets (undefeated btw).

the fact that Cormier personally knew the dude before their fight says he was clearly already on the path for quite a few years, from wrestling to training camps, he's a legit grinder at 205 I'd like to see him fight Shogun next

Cummins wasn't just some barista, he was already an experienced and undefeated MMA fighter with an outstanding collegiate wrestling background.

It was, however, still pretty ridiculous for him to come in on short notice, and out of practice to fight one of the top fighters in the world for his first UFC fight.

Cormier always said he is legit, I think he beats shogun and a couple of top 10, he can be the white davis that can sometimes knock his oponents

    LHW is so bad, haha.

Cummins has some potential though. If he can become a strong striker he could make things interesting.

Similar style of fighting. Bader wins another fight might end of fighting for title so Cummins could conceivably go the same route.

Huge balls for taking on Cormier in his first fight though. Second best heavyweight in the world for your UFC debut? Ouch...

Ya, it's not like he had zero experience and decided to start wrestling and training MMA within 1 year. He's always been involved with wrestling so he understands the culture, the weight cutting, how to train, etc.

I don't know if he would have eventually made it into the UFC without the whole DC angle that he played but he has talent. That being said he isn't beating top 10 competition right now but Cavalcante isn't a bum either.
