Just to get it out of the way, for me its
Jon Jones
Anderson Silva
Aldo
Fedor
GSP
I know this is a subjective and often touchy subject on Sherdog but I just want to better understand people's thinking when it comes to this. As I'm sure most of you have noticed, there is a certain someone at the bottom of my top 5 that many would argue should be at the top of the list. This what I want to understand, mostly.
To be considered a GOAT you have to:
Have a long streak of wins.
Be a champion and have many title defenses.
Beat people in a dominant fashion.
Any I am missing?
Nobody has done the above 3 better than Jon Jones in my opinion. He made former champions look like they don't belong in the ring with him and had only 1 close fight which I thought he won with Gus. His stupid ass would have so many more wins if he wasn't an idiot outside the cage.
Anderson same stuff while he was reigning. The last few years of his career doesn't weigh on his legacy to me. He keeps on fighting instead of retiring while on top. The freak knock out was his fault and since then I feel his years caught up with him. While he was doing it, nobody did it better than him except JBJ. Love how he fought at LHW also in between championships.
Aldo got mind fucked and caught by the master of trash talk. He seems to be showing how mind fucked he is now but the guy has one of the most awesome highlight reels in the game still. Definite GOAT.
Fedor wrecked so hard in Japan and Russia. Then he lost to Werdum, then fkin Bigfoot and Hendo =( This is where the subjectivity comes into play for me... I loved his aggressive fighting style which catapults his dominant wins and diminishes his stupid losses.
GSP is the GOAT for so many people and I want to know why he can be considered better than the top 3 I listed. GSP had an awesome streak of wins. He defended his title many times. But... what disappoints me so much about him is he could not finish anyone the last 6 years of his career. And on top of that, the challengers that he defeated were getting finished by other fighters after that. A friend said to me that "GSP showed other fighters how to beat those challengers so it became easier." BS because they got finished and not taken down and jabbed over and over. Can a GOAT be a GOAT without the killer instinct? I feel like his potential was so much more than what he gave to us fans. Its like if he was a football team, he would kick a field goal then just run out the clock because he was good enough to get ball control back everytime without letting the other team score. That is why Fedor is a greater fighter and champion in my opinion.
Sorry for the long drawn out post, I have made many posts about GSP and all I get is hate. I am trying to intelligently find out now what it is about him without being a dick how people revere him so much.
