I just suffered a small fracture in my ankle. Doc said he coud cast it and it would heal, but...yada, yada, yada...surgery is the best option. I've decided to just cast it and be patient. Anyone ever go through this? How long until you think i can grapple/do squats and such. never had a break before, totally bummed out right now.

My brother broke his ankle 8 weeks ago in bjj - some f**kin idiot did not know the meaning of 50% for takedown drills and came over the top crushing his ankle - anyway he was in a cast for 6 weeks and for the last 2 weeks its being sore and swollen - doctor said no grappling (judo, bjj or SAMBO) for at least six months

I fractured and dislocated my ankle playing football, and It required surgery and two permanent screws. All and all It took me bout 8 months in total to really walk and run without swelling and hurting.

i broke my ankle in two places, got surgery and they placed a rod in that biotch. . i was in an boot for about 3 weeks. then an aircast right after. after i got the aircast i started doing armbar drills and hangin around the gym. i was rolling about 3 months after. i had a great doctor (Dr. Chow from the San Diego Chargers, he had me going like i was an NFL player getting my all hyped up and walking on it after 3 weeks then right into PT. he was even saying im gonna have you ready in no time! haha.) .

wow...i'm hoping the fact he presented me w/ 2 options is good. i really don't wanna be out 6-8 months...i was thinking about 4, but just have to wait and see i guess

I broke mine over 15 years ago, still hurts when it is cold

My ankle took about 6 months to walk correctly and another few months to go full bore

Just curious, how did you fracture it?

I wish that was all I'd broken.
I hit a deer on my motorcycle last October on the way home from training. One of my injuries was 4 broken bones in my right foot & 2 in my right ankle (also the left foot / kneecap / tibia / hand / ribs / etc.). Doc said it'd take a year to heal & then we'd look again to see when I could go back to training.
Long story short I went back to training 4 months later for my 50th birthday present to myself.
Don't push it & try to come back too soon or you'll reinjure it and do more harm (as I did with some ribs I broke several years ago in a motorcycle wreck) but you should know your body and will be able to tell when it is ready to come back.
Hell, if I believed everything a Doc told me I would be hopping around without a left leg that they wanted to cut off in 1981 because of a motorcycle wreck (yeah, I know there' seems to be a pattern there).
BTW- surgery wasn't an option in my case due to the damage from the 1981 wreck.

The general rule I've heard is about 6 weeks upper limb, 12 weeks lower. But that's a vague rule of thumb and I am only a freshly made doctor so...

lol...if you're really a dr., could you take a look at my x-ray's and tell me if you think i need surgery...serously though, i'll post 'em up here if you guys wanna see, they gave me a cd-rom at the hospital to take to my specialist. is this normal now? i've never broken anything before.

First I am not a doctor. Please seek proper medical attention for your injuries.

That said I am an xray tech at a trauma hospital. I have seen femoral nails, tibial nails,
major pelvis repairs, external fixations ect place in the operating room many times. Really I am just curious to see the images the hospital/took. Either way I will say go see a good orthopedic doctor.

Damn and I'm pissed about slight tears in my elbow ligament.... I haven't trained in 2 weeks and I'm going bonkers. I hope you heal up and get back to training soon.
