After working out I overheard some talk about 'make sure to take your recovery drink'. It seemed as though it was something mixed in with their water as they worked out. Is a 'recovery drink' a protien shake or does that refer to a specific product? Something else altogether? Thanks!

I always assumed that it was a protein shake.

The important parts of a 'recovery drink' is just carbs and protein in a roughly 2:1 mixture, as far as I know. Premade recovery drinks have a bazillion things in them though. A lot of those things are just for fancy labeling purposes though...

I just drink a milk + whey shake myself. I don't do well with high carb ingestion, and I 'recover' perfectly fine with my concoction. It generally has around 50ish grams of protein and around 25ish grams of carbs in the form of lactose from milk. Also, quite honestly, whether I drink a milk/protein shake afterwards or just eat a good solid meal, I don't notice any difference in 'recovery'. I've tried samples of fancy schmancy recovery drinks too, and I can't say I noticed anything different with them either.

Carbs & protein are what most consider for recovery. Unfortunately, many pre-made "recovery drinks" will have a bunch of BS in them that ranges from pointless to counter-productive. Stick with protein and carbs, but like Stormbringer, I think 2:1 CHO : PRO is too much and I generally don't even go out of my way to get extra carbs PWO.

Eat some meat and potatoes, growin food. In all honestly though I like to drink a whey shake after and then make sure I have a good decent carb and protein based meal within an hour or two after a really hard workout.

Recovery doesn't just refer to Protein.

Specific Recovery Drinks are things like Endurox, Accelerade, Cellmass.

Usually when you refer to recovery drinks you are talking about something that has a blend on amino acids, sugars like Dextrose, Electrolytes, Creatine Etc.

i just drink milk, whey, an egg, honey all mixed up after lifting. The honey is because i accidentley bought ON 100% natural and it tastes very very bland.

All 3 of those are what I described above. protein + carbs with small amounts of other stuff that ranges from worthless to counter-productive. Anything other than the PRO & CHO is in tiny amounts and basically only there to pad the label.
