The RNC has been my bread and butter for a while now. The beauty is in its simplicity, wrap the arm around the neck, grab the other bicep, weak arm behind the head, squeeze the elbows together and puff out your chest. Ive also heard of people using different grips and ways of squeezing to apply the pressure, but the result is always the same. But since Ive started working out more Ive had some complaints about my RNC. Specifically, that people are feeling it on their throat before their arteries. My biceps have gotten bigger and it makes sense that if you apply a tight RNC the trachea will get crushed as pressure is put on the arteries. But Im a little OCD and I dont know anyone else who has this problem. So heres my question. How do you(meaning you personally) apply the choke, and have you ever had similar complaints? I welcome everyones response, but I would really like to hear from guys my level and above(blue and up). Thanks fellas:icon_chee

it sounds like your not expanding your chest.

I am, but why do you say that? Can you explain what you think, if anything, is wrong with my mechanics and ow it effects the choke? I usually puff my chest out and pull my shoulders back while squeezing my elbows together at the same time. Do you do something different?

not really. To be honest, from what you are telling me.. it seems like you are doing it the right way.. I have had buff guys with big arms rnc me and it never really hurt my throat... The only other thing i can think of is that maybe you are not getting deep enough so your opponen'ts neck is int eh crook of your elbow..

Youve never felt like you needed to cough during a tight RNC? Ive been told by some people that maybe I have it too deep.....but who knows. Its not always a problem so Its hard to put my finger on it. Thanks for the help though, thats the kind of stuff Im lookin for.

i've never heard of anything like that. complaints that i get from people are when i crank their chin, either way it's a tap, and i've never seen "jaw cranks" listed under illegal techniques in tournaments.

Sounds as though your not getting your arm through far enough, although a tap is a tap but. . .

The elbow of the choking arm should be through so that the bend of your elbow is cupping their adams apple (although if I assume that is you in your av it looks perfect). When you squeeze try less of a pulling motion and more of a squeeze (try to touch your elbows together)If you do it to a unresisting opp. do you getting the same throat crush complaints?

Why not choke on the throat?
As long as you don't grab the trachea it's a pretty good and not dangerous sub.

if i feel i am pressing too much on the front of their throat i will make my arm at a more bent angle so instead of grabbing my bicep i will nearly be grabbing my shoulder, try that

you may not be "pushing your chest forward" (aka tryin to put your shoulderblades together.) alot of guys will try to just arch the back and stretch the body out to create the pressure, or just squeezing with their biceps, both of which are effective, but have limitations. pulling your shoulderblades together as soon as you hook the sub will create an immensely smaller cavity for the opp. neck, thus creating a quicker and more powerful choke.

or you're doing just that and they guys you roll with arent used to the proper technique?

What the hell is a "MATA LEO WITH FOOT" ?

Ive been taught to grab my shoulder so thats its tighter, it may very well sink down to the bicep but if you grab your shoulder you can apply pressure with your chest more easily.

As far as I understand it's a mata leo, a rear naked choke, performed with the foot.

I've seen variations of it performed from top turtle if I remember correctly but I must admit it is a sub beyond my inflexible capabilities at this point in time.

People shouldnt complain about but the issue is the placement of your choking arm.

If you check out Aesopians, or Stephan Kestings tutuorials you can see what your missing. You need to "punch" your arm across more. So that your elbow is at their adams apple. Making it more of a solid blood choke, a cleaner finish.

Thanks for the advice guys. The issue here is that the elbow IS at the adams apple, but im still getting complaints. Ive even had Erik Paulson look at my RNC and he said it was perfect. For some reason though I have certain people complain that it hurts their trachea before their arteries. Gsoares- Ive got both Kestings and Aesopians tutorials and follow them closely. I do everything mentioned in those and still have the problem. Codemonkey- I grab the shoulder whenever possible(Paulson showed me that) and Ive been told it hurts even worse!

To clarify, its not that my forearm is putting pressure on the throat. Its than when I have it lined up properly, and I squeeze my elbows together, its is squeezing the sides of their trachea and their arteries at the same time. And yes to whoever asked, that is me in my avatar.

whatever, if you get a little jaw or windpipe in there it ain't no thang. sometimes i'll get the RNC with my partner's hand in there. the standard bicep grip with your other hand behind the guy's head and under your own chin is such an insanely powerful grip...use it to your advantage.

I've been warned to stop choking the face.

What do you mean officially banned subs? Like in ADCC or what? I have never actually taken brazillian jiu jitsu just submission grappling so I don't know all the rules or how the belts work and that. All I know is that I've been a white belt for about 5 years and I use all those moves regularly except the mata leo with foot because I don't know what that is. My instructor is a really good white blet ;)
