Hey,

I currently live in Houston, but may be moving to Albany Ny soon. I plan on starting jiu jitsu lessons while I'm there for about 8 months. So, I checked out what I could find on the web and Nova Uniao looks like the best school. Unfortunately, their website is quite bare. I also found that in Downtown Albany, in the local YMCA, Victor "Braga" McLeod gives lessons under the school name Victory BJJ. He is a student of Roberto "Maguilla" Marques DaSilva, a 4th degree Black Belt under Carlson Gracie Sr.

Anyway, if you have any experience with either of these schools or know of any other good schools in Albany (or Schenectady) let me know. Any info would be appreciated.

In other words, which school should I choose? Keep in mind that I've never trained before, so it needs to be a school that is good for a beginner. I'm not fat or a spaz, so I'm sure wherever I go I'll progress at a good pace. Also, it would be nice to go to a school that teaches other disciplines as I am interested in muay thai and kickboxing.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

No shit. I just moved back here (Albany) now that I'm done with college. The other schools I know of are Empire MA (theres a guy from my high shcool who trains mma there) and theres a BJJ class in the Nyskayuna Gold's Gym. I heard good things about Empire but I havent been able to check out any clubs first hand yet cause I'm a slave to my internship and I have to get it done to get my diploma. please let me know how it goes since I will be joining one soon when my wrist heals up and I get my life back.

Thanks for the link. I looked on google maps and it appears that Empire is just a block or two away from nova uniao, which is here

I wonder if they work together.

By the way, I'm also tasked with the challege of deciding where to live in albany. I'm thinking downwtown on lark st. It looks like a fun place to live for a young person. (i'm 30)

Ur thoughts?

hey, i go to school at suny albany, and there was the novo uniao there, but i heard the guy was moving to teh city, so i dont know how true that is. PM me, because I wrestle for suny (club team, only one years expierence)m and I want to continue doing some bjj, so if you ever want, we can meet and train.

i used to train at albany nova uniao and "Biggie" moved to NYC so that is done but i hear victor is good

Victor is a great instructor and a cool guy. I trained with him for a year while I was at SUNY Albany. Definately check him out

Training with Victor at Victory (the YMCA downtown) would be good because I could walk to and from home to train. The down side is that it's at the YMCA but I really don't care all that much about that. My priority is finding a solid instructor, so I'll definitely give Victor a call soon. Any of you guys know how much he charges? Also, how much other places charge?

Once again, any advice on where to live would be very much appreciated. I've never been to Albany but I have to go there for nine months to go to a GE Turbine school in schenectady.

Lark st and downtown Albany is a good location if you like the night life and to go to the bars and party. Its also usually more economical to live there than colonie which is more suburban.

some parts of albany are shit holes to becareful. those areas mentioned by BlastBeasts do have the bars at night, but i suggest looking around albany first.

yello everybody. I am in the same boat. I am moving back in sept and i need to find a mma/bjj school to go to. i would really like to find one where there is no gi submission grappling, as i am not that fond of using the gi. any help would be great. I also heard of a place called elite bjj. anyone know their class schedule? thanks again

Bruno Tostes - Renzo Gracie Brown Belt teaches in Latham, NY. There are classes 7 days a week. Please check out www.brunobjj.com for more info.

My $.02 on Bruno...

Taken from a thread I started in the 'Martial Arts BS, Fraud...Standards' forum- just so y'all have another opinion before you sign anything w/ Bruno Tostes. Do with it what you will.
