DOOM (revisited)

Its on Netflix and ive been avoiding it cuz id figured it would only make me mad like when i first saw it, but theres not many horrors ive not seen and i thought, fuck it.

This movie...has a budget! Or...it knows how to manage one. The setting is almost always in a lab and a small one at that. However the costumes and make up, theyre..awesome. the creatures are dominantly practical. Shit, i cant think of any that werent besides the wheelchair guy and it looked good. Cgi was primarily used for the arc travel and gunfire.

Its a basic story and reminds me of the resident evil movie. And...well i prefer this. Theres a research facility on Mars that uncovers some sort of chemistry to make people either super soldiers or monsters. A group of wanna be Predator team stand ins get sent there to clean house. Later they find not everyone is infected and the leader of the alpha team decides to kill everyone anyway.

This..is NOT Doom. Just like Resident evil was NOT Resident evil. However, this movie is stealing the games name and some elements. That pisses me off, but the cheese and campiness is not as saturated as in Resident Evil. If the movie wasnt called Doom, it would be forgettable and i admit, the title is why id watch it, but if it wasnt the doom name, ita not that bad.

Personally, i dont like cheese in my horror. pretty much ever. AND when i am told this movie is going to be based on a game i love, now there are expectations. Doom has a lil bit of cheese and it did not match any Doom expectations, but the flashes of instances that were like the game, i enjoyed. Even the FPS part near the end was still delightful.

I suppose i could recommend it IF a person can think of it as a different movie than Doom, but a movie that steals Dooms ideas.

No Country for Old Men - 10/10

I remember seeing little bits of it back then and decided to rewatch it. I only really remember seeing the scenes with Anton so I went in expecting a super slow burn psychological thriller and I was blown away. The tension in this movie is so well done. I haven't seen a movie in a while that kept me on the edge of my seat or made me jump out of it like NCFOM. Not only that but I loved the classic Coen dialogues, characters, cinematography, and ending. The movie really exceeded my expectations.

World War Z (2013)

This was basically a much better version of 28 Days Later (which was an overrated film). This film had more depth and was more interesting than most other Zombie films I have seen.

Watched this the other night. The dialogue and character interaction were a little flat in the beginning, but the action more than made up for it. Story was good, with a combination sci fi/revenge plot going on, and even had some laughs. Would recommend if you dig action flicks and don't mind a bit of sci fi thrown in.
8/10.

"Not Man. Not Machine. More." Where have I heard that line before?

The Possession (2012)

ThePossession2012Poster.jpg

Normally I am fan of possession movies, but this one was not very good. It also really drags in the beginning and takes a long while to get even remotely interesting. The film is advertised as being inspired by a true story, but I couldn't find anything to support this. The only part of the film that appears to have any basis in fact is the use of a Dybbuk box (which is supposedly a haunted box).

Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988)

Hellbound_hellraiser_ii_ver2.jpg

When I first saw this film in the late 80's, I remember thinking back then it was one of the greatest horror films I had seen. Pretty shocking and cutting edge at the time of it's release. After watching it again, all these years later, it doesn't hold up quite that well. The special effects are really dated (among other things).

St. Vincent (2014)

This movie ranks pretty low on the list of Bill Murray films. It wasn't very good. Melissa McCarthy is overrated as fuck.

I'm 2 weeks behind so here's a dump...

Venom -
venom-4-700x350.jpg

Not as bad as the trailers, so that's a plus. Just about everything I disliked in the trailer wasn't as bad as it was in the movie. Like Tom Hardy's accent, it seemed like he was playing some dude with mental retardation, which didn't make sense. But then they set his character up in the beginning, and it totally made sense. Venom made him unretarded. Smart movie. 6/10

A Star is Born - Bradly Cooper was the beefcake to Gaga's babealiciousness. It wasn't only a love story, but a movie about addiction and finding your way through it, not out of it. A lot sadder than I expected, and not at all gushy. I thought it would've required 2 sets of panties to be worn because of Cooper, but it didn't call for it. It was a well performed drama with Cooper and Gaga carrying it with very catchy music. Seeing this trailer 4,200 times (it was played 5 times during The Nun. Not lying.) made me want to hate it, but the first minute changed my mind. 8/10

First Man - You ever wonder what happened to the Driver in Drive? Well here he is. Gosling barely said a peep in the film and just stared off. He's done it before but this time he has even more emotion, and it actually means something unlike in Drive where his backstory was never revealed. Either way, this movie had me smiling when Neil Armstrong fought a bunch of impossible feats and won. I knew he was the leader of the Apollo missions, he was the first to do all the important stuff, but I never knew why. First Man paints a picture of a broken hero trying to survive his pain. 8/10

Bad Times at The El Royal -

A movie that suffers from a very entertaining trailer, but does not exceed that level of entertainment in the actual movie. I thought it was going to be a film with a lot of surprises and twists. To the characters, yeah, every surprise and twist is new to them. But for the audience, you know just about everything important that you need to know in the first 20 minutes, and when it's all revealed it's only new to the characters, not you, so it's just not as entertaining and surprising. The story jumps around in time a lot. And not far into the past or future, but it jumps around in 10 minute increments constantly, so you're wondering if a certain event already happened or not. I got distracted by that often wondering "is this after that person died, or before?" then missing something trying to figure it out. The ending is a kick to the sack and a loogey to the face because it thinks it was so cool that it can end in a sweet way. Fuck that hogwash. It was loooong. 2 hours and 20 minutes felt like 3 hours. 5.5/10

Saw Venom last night with the wife, we both enjoyed it. I am so tired of hero movies but I loved Venom growing up, so I went in just hoping for some entertainment and not worrying about it too much. Ended up being a fun night, the Girl Scout Cookie joint we smoked before the movie definitely helped lol.

Children of the Corn (1984)

I was probably 6 or 7 years old the first time I saw this film, and I recall being pretty damn shocked and disturbed by it. This is the first time I had seen it in decades. It holds up. Still one of the greatest horror films of all time.

LOL where'd you find this. I knew I wasnt the only one who thought this was a terrible poster design. It's crazy how bad design can totally warp someones perception or expectation of something. If I hadn't accepted that I'd be watching more a Broadway play than Casino halfway through the movie, I would have thought it was shit.

The Other Guys (2010)

This film had a great cast and looked promising in the beginning (a good mock of "buddy cop" films), but it was mostly a pretty bland film. Not much to it.

I hadn't watched this movie in decades. It is a great story with an awesome cast. Still the best of the Jack Ryan films.

First Man (2018)

I enjoyed this movie a lot. Ryan Gosling isn't very animated as Neil Armstrong, but I suppose this is to be more historically accurate and less "Hollywood." There were rumors that this movie didn't show the American flag being planted in the lunar soil, but it does in fact show the American flag there in one shot. Parts of this film were a little depressing, and it did a really good job of depicting how much these Astronauts risked and sacrificed for these missions. I had a relative, who is no longer with us, that worked for NASA during the Gemini and Apollo missions. This film made me think of them.

I made it real quick

Finally saw Arrival tonight. Really enjoyed it. Amy Adams is gold. And Jeremy Renner is always welcome in my film watchin’. Love a good slow sci-fi that doesn’t try to be an action film.
