After Soares told dos Anjos that the UFC gave him "the Russian," dos Anjos assumed No. 7-ranked lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov was on the offering table, and he accepted the fight.
I thought it was the Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov, who (is) seventh in the rankings. Even though he was behind me, I thought it was a fight that might make more sense, and I accepted. Only two days later, a publication tagged me on Twitter and I saw it was Rustam Khabilov. Then I saw that something was wrong and called my manager, and he said: "Not Khabib (Nurmagomedov)". But then I had already accepted the fight.
hile Khabilov is on an impressive three-fight winning streak inside the Octagon, he represents a significant step back for dos Anjos from a rankings perspective. Even worse, he possesses explosive power and a world-class Sambo background, so he presents a serious threat wherever the fight may go.
Dos Anjos realizes that he is stuck in a lose-lose situation with this fight, but he will move forward and look to take care of business Feb. 22.
Khabilov is not the opponent that we wanted (and) will not throw me too far forward, but the UFC knows what they're doing. I'm in the business for five years now. I have gotten good results and very much like to be a UFC fighter, living in the company. So, it's a struggle...(and) God willing, will be a victory.
