are you guys taught to angle your kick downward (45 degrees down in a chopping motion)when doing the muay thai roundhouse when aimed at legs?

if your going for the outside leg nearve, yes very much so, inside leg not so much

the way i was taught is to angle downward on the outside leg and upward on the inside leg.

i do and am taught to. it's easier on my knee when i angle it down because when i hit it straight on and the dude checks it f'ing hurts like a mutha

it seems that when i angle the kick downwards it slows down the kick abit, maybe i just need more practice

not so much angle down, more parralell with the ground, and bend your supporting leg as you pivot

both should be trained...sometimes you need just to swing the leg out real quick and bring it back.

Angling "down" is great a teaching a learning tool but you don't want to be actively thinking like that after you figure out the basics. Too much of that attitude eventually leads to guys with artificially limited range when they hit medium skill level. After you get the basic motion, you should be thinking more about projecting your hip and weight forward, not down.

For the most damage on the outside of the leg absolutely angle down. But it does slow my kicks down too, so if it means the differense between checking the kick and not having the kick checked, don't angle it, just get it there quick. Inside leg kicks I've learned straight accross or slightly upward is best. On a side note, someone said to aim 1/2 between the knee and hip. I was taught to aim only 4-6 inches above the knee. I'm not saying he is wrong, but there might be different schools of thought on that point.
