This fight basically showcased why boxing is dying. Yes, MMA is shoving boxing out the door, but a big reason for that is because these guys are almost all fighting not to lose. The skill these boxers have is incredible, but we rarely get to see anything beyond a glimpse of what they have to offer because of how tentative they are. Especially the top tier fighters. Boxing has shifted from a beautiful form of martial arts combat to a points system. Stat sheets are also indescribably useless in combat sports. I hate that they keep bringing them up during fights. What they were giving Mayweather for "landing" punches were ridiculous. Many of those "punches landed" would barely phase a baby.

I think most educated combat sports fans predicted this fight would be pretty uneventful with Mayweather squealing out a jabfest decision. Goodbye, boxing. I will forever cherish what you had to offer in every generation previous to this one.

Boxing is probably actually peaking right now. This thread is stupid. There's more televised boxing right now than at any point in history and we just watched a fight that is going to break all sorts of records.

One word - boring.

Id rather watch Ben Askren.

Just like hipsters fork out thousands for a Crapbook Pro, Paris Hilton will pay tens of thousands to show up to a sport she doesn't even like.

Then boxing fans will point to the live gate numbers to detract attention from the boredom of the sport itself.

I was falling asleep and I watched it in HD with a room full of people

Floyd hurts boxing imo, he's brilliant but he made it into more of a business then about competition. Boxing will be fine though, on network tv which is good. This fight hurt boxing badly though, all those casual eye balls and all of them disappointed.

Let me guess you watch 2 boxing matches per year. And lol at MMA overtaking boxing.

I'm basically a casual boxing fan and even I ain't this dumb. Boxing is not Floyd. He is merely a boxer of this current age. He'll be gone soon and others will take his place, boxing will not die.

Don't you think it's pretty pathetic that this fight is "going to break all sorts of records"?

These are the last great boxers that people cared to pay attention to before boxing began dying. Boxing is absolutely not peaking right now.

Again how can boxing be dying after the biggest money fight in history? It's such a moronic statement. Will MMA be dying if Aldo vs Connor does 2 million PPV buys, which there is no chance in hell it'll reach?

Boxing is dying?

Thats why this fight alone generated like half of the UFC's yearly revenue?

'Boxing is dying' what people have been saying for almost a century.

GSP if any mma fan knows this name, his fighting style, and the money he
brought to mma then they should know that Floyd just does the same thing.

Sigh.

"Boxing is dead." "Boxing is dying." They said the same 10, 20 years ago.

I disagree that MMA is somehow killing boxing, but I disagree that boxing is "peaking" in any way. The records set are because the market is much bigger, with population increase, globalization, and improved technology.

May-Pac may be the most viewed fight in history, but it not as big of a deal as, say, Ali-Frazier I. And it stands pretty solitary in today's landscape of big fights.

I wouldn't say boxing is dying, but I think it's not enjoying particularly good times right now with regards to popularity. People just care less than they used to.

Boxing dies gets resurrected into the living death

Good post this. ^

People relate the word dying to "it's not going to be around" when people don't really mean that.

You don't understand, the fight we just witnessed was a fight between two of the best current fighters in the entire sport who have been completely dominating boxing rankings for years . Look at guys right under them. Do you think any casual fan knows who Roman Gonzales is? Or Guillermo Rigondeaux?

Let's be honest, yes this one fight will set records. Out side these two fighters what is there. Not a whole lot.
