Quick question

I was wondering, is it better when doing sets to gradually add more weight to where you do one set at your maximum weight for 5RM. For exmaple, 100, 115, 130, 145, 160. or do like 145 for all 5 sets. I read to articles while back that seemed to have conflicting opinions on it. One saying stop being a pussy and just do 5RM each time, another saying to gradually work up to max for 5 reps. I am just using the 5x5 as an example also btw. I'd rather just ask people first hand rather than find more articles to support either side.
 
You get conflicting opinions because both of those methods can work. I prefer adding weight to every set but that's me. There isn't a right and wrong answer for this.
 
Alright thanks, I too prefer adding weight every time to. I try to do 2 sets at my #RM most of the time. Just wanted to make sure cause I only started lifting like... 2-3 months ago. Still learning.

Do both, variety is key
 
I too add weight for each set until I hit my max. I do not usually go back down again because to be honest it just takes too much time to build up and down again but that pyramid style of workout is good for your body so it is good to work it into the mix sometimes.

I have another question to add. When you guys are adding weight to each set do you also lower your reps? Like do you start off doing 12 reps then 10 then 8 then 5 or something like that or do you just do 5 reps in every set until you max out?

if i add weight then i do less reps, because, its too heavy for me to do more/same reps

Going up then down seems to allow me to squeeze every ounce of training out of my muscles.

I start low weight/high rep, then go to higher weight/lower rep, then lower/higher on the way back down.
 
i personally increase weight but keep the reps the same. 5x5 on the big 3. i go up by 5 kg's each set

If I can't hit 5 on the last set though, I'll knock up my starting weight for set one and have set 4 at 2.5kg away from the set I couldn't finish last time

ie
fail at 130 for last set


so next time 127.5 for 4th set
130 for 5th
