Fairly often, day drinking (of alcohol, obviously) is thought of as a sign of alcoholism, or perhaps as a sign that one is heading in that direction. Is it valid to think of day drinking that way?

Frankly, if someone literally wakes up and starts drinking like it was a cup of coffee or something, I'm gonna figure they have an alcohol problem. I've never actually witnessed that in real life, though. Only in movies or TV.

Let's say, day drinking could be indicative of a problem, how early is the danger zone? Technically, 4PM is daytime, but few would look askance at someone partaking of a late afternoon cocktail. How about 12 noon as the cutoff? Or is that still too early?

Related Question: What if when you day drink, you just take a few sips to get slightly mellow? Is that safe? Or is that still something to be concerned about?

PS - Let's all agree right off the bat that drinking while watching a live MMA event during the day doesn't count. Fight Nights sometimes take place in the middle of the day. It's only natural to consume the beverage of your choice while watching MMA.

When I'm off work, I day drink sometimes. I even drink in the morning if my anxiety is a little high. Just a beer or two to take off the edge.

I think its all about the dosage, aka the amount you drink.
Although, you will still be labeled as an alcoholic by your colleagues if you take a cup of beer in the morning instead of coffee so thats that.

And yet all the rules change when you go on holiday abroad.......

For a few years('07-09) that was me. I'd wake up, walk to the store and buy a gallon of Carlo Rossi, it would be gone by sun down. Then I'd start drinking for real.

Yep, i do too, but its usually cuz of bad sleep either from drinking the night before or bad dreams.

I used to day drink with no problem, but the time to stop is always flawed. What, stop at say 530pm? When do you sleep? 630pm? I never sleep throughout the night, thinking it will make up for such a long day.

Thats what fucks you with day drinking. If its your day off, you can go all day. So now, its not WHAT you drink + how MUCH you drink, you also factor in how LONG you drink.

Yeah, true that.

Is it your day off?
Do you have shit to do?
If it isnt interfering with your life of getting things done and you dont turn into a blacked out monster youre fine as long as you dont make a habit of it.

Its more of an issue when you feel like you need to drink instead of wanting to drink.

Cant really go by time of day people run on different schedules.

I am drinking now, it is 6:14 am. My life is shit.
It's 9:09 here.
I had sex and then a scotch.
Much better and different than yday. When I was having a Scotch without any sex whatsoever.

I don't day drink but I don't think I it means much because it can be easier to day drink for people with kids or weird hours sometimes. They're usually all done by 8pm.

My alcohol problem was bad but manageable for like 9 months. I was high functioning despite having a fifth every single night.

Where it went REALLY downhill REALLY fast is when I began starting my mornings with 3-5 shots to take the edge/hangover off. Wasnt long after that habit began that the shakes started and I no longer had the ability to resist drinking. That fifth a night turned into 24/7 round the clock drinking. No longer eating. No longer sleeping more than 2 hours at a time.
