Well we all know by now that Roger Gracie dominated the Mundials this year, and he did so using a technique that all of us are taught immediately in our training, yet probably master last (as I recall from an old friend & brown belt whose bread n butter are gi chokes while on top: "the choke is the first sub you'll learn, but the last sub you'll master").
Throughout my training I heavily neglected gi chokes (I relied primarily on triangle or RNCs). Recently I started to implement darce and arm-triangle chokes. Yet despite all this, I somehow overlooked the most basic yet, if successfully applied, most effective and easily available chokehold.
I find it most difficult to apply this choke when both of my hands are 4 fingers in. I recently adapted to the palm-up/4 fingers-in (right hand) + thumb in/palm-down 4 finger grip over the collar(left hand). I threaten this as often as I can (from butterfly, guard, mount, knee on the belly). Though my attempts usually open up opportunities for other submissions (usually armbars, of which I'm better at applying). In fact, I don't think I've nailed a single legit gi-choke from the mount on any mid level blue belt and up. This only furthers my awe in seeing Roger apply this effortlessly on WORLD CLASS BLACKBELTS...
With that being said, I would really like to know exactly what kind of gi choke Roger applied. We all know how many variations there are (see above).
Can anyone clarify his technique?
p.s. - Roger should really consider doing a dvd set dedicated to just this choke. I never purchased a single dvd instructional, but I'd buy this in a heartbeat if it existed.
