Hello F12, I'm aware that it is good hygiene and ettiquette to wash your gi before taking it to class if you wore it for a previous class. I currently have one gi and am waiting for the second one to come in, hopefully some time this week, if not early next week.

My current class schedule is Tues and Thurs, and this is my question. Does Gi 1 need to be washed immediately after Tues class, or can it wait until Gi 2 has been worn on Thurs and then dumped together for one wash? I feel bad wasting water to wash just one gi on Tues, and then having to do the same on Thurs. Is it ok to leave a gi 1 unwashed for two days?

What you say, Sherdog?

I wash mine every day... washing 5 days a week.

Don't wait. The longer you wait the more that funk sets in. I have one gi i let sit a few times and no matter how much i wash it it still smells. Gonna have to give it a vinegar bath.

Some bacteria growing in your gi have a reproduction time of 20 minutes. Waiting 48 hours could mean you have thousands of times as much bacteria on your clothes than if you washed immediately.

What do you do if you like a good distance away from your gym?

Set it on fire and buy a new gi.

If that isn't cost effective, get a disinfectant spray like Lysol clean linen scented, and give the clothes a spritz.

Wash that shit as soon as you wear it.
Funny story. In 96 I watched my first ufc. I went to the yellow pages and signed up for the first jiu jitsu class I found. Well it was Japanese Ju Jitsu and the only class I could make was the Judo class with 2 guys that had been training together for 10 years. Before every tournament they would spar real hard about 5 days before the tourney. They would take their gi off and put it in a garbage bag and close. They wouldn't open it until the day of the tourny. Gross thing I ever heard. I lasted about 3 months and I was out. They were some sick dudes.
Wash your gi. You don't want to be the guy nobody rolls with cause you stink

I have a similar schedule. I always wait and wash them together. It's never been an issue, they don't smell.
However most of the time I hang my dirty gi outside in the sun until the other one gets dirty and I wash them both so at least it's not just bundled up in a dark place.

Cause I agree it's a waste of water. Once or twice I had a rashguard smell still after washing. So I put it in direct sunlight for a day and washed it again, it was fine.

Just to be clear, I never step on to the mat with a worn gi , it's always washed when i wear it.

I mean seriously , spraying your gi with lysol because of a long drive home? That's silly

If you absolutely cannot wash it right away, soak it in a bucket/tub/sink with warm water and a scoop of two of OxyClean or a cup of white vinegar. Then when you get around to washing the next gi, throw the first gi in the washer too.

I wait and wash the gi's two and two as I agree that washing 1 gi in the machine is a waste. I havent had any stinky problems with them at all.

It's fine to wait. Maybe don't seal it in an airtight bag. If it smells you can use bleach. A little bleach every so often does not kill your gi.

Wash it right away. Stop being lazy and cheap.

When you get home.. put it in the wash and let it soak in the hot and cold cycle with about a cap full of bleach for about 30 minutes.. No one wants your FUNK to stay in your gi and multiply like rabbits

Meh. I wash my gis when I need a gi, I don't really have a problem with lingering funk. I'll let them go two days in the laundry bin, it's not a big deal.

We are encouraged to wear our school gi and I only have one but train in it twice a week so I put it in the washer every night as soon as I get home from class. The only REAL hard rule is that we wear a white gi, but school gi looks better for impromptu pics on promotion days lol

I wash mine as soon as I get home along with my rashguard, knee sleeves etc. For the first six months of owning a new gi I line dry but then after that I just throw in the dryer. If it's way big when I buy it then I'll dry it right away. I tried like hell to shrink my fuji budget gi and the damn thing didn't change one bit and had to be altered by a seamstress.

I'm a wash right away kinda person as well but also don't like the idea of wasting water so I'll usually throw in a few pieces of other dirty laundry to wash with the gi. Gi still gets air dried while the other items just go into the dryer.

I usually train four times a week with four different gis. After each class I take my gi out and let it air dry. Then I wash all four of the gis together at the end of the week in one load of laundry. It hasn't been an issue for me or my training partners.

Guess how much you sweat matters as well. I drench my Gi's sometimes, i couldn't imagine letting them air dry out.

This seems like my most likely course of action. Just had class today, and the gi is washed and dried by 11 PM, wayyyy too late for me to be doing this consistently, especially since i have squadron pt tomorrow morning.

So you just put Gi 1 in the tub of water with detergent, and let it sit? Do you air dry it or what?

I did this today as I had some whites that needed to be washed away. Same exact thing you did. Probably won't do it again next time if I start using the let the gi sit in a tub of detergent method.

The sooner you wash it, the better. However, if you don't wash right away, it is imperative that you hang the gi/pants up some where so they can dry and air out, preferably with maximal sun exposure. if you hang your gi, in terms of microbial growth, there will probably be very little difference between 30 hours, and infinite hours. if you don't let your gi dry, them microbes will continue to grow until they decompose your body the moment you wear the thing.
