Just rewatched this and first i'd like to say what a great fight!

But what drops my jaw is why in hell would Tommy Hearns go toe-to-toe with the ultra tough Marvin Hagler...obviously there was some rivalry between these greats but it defies all logic.
Hearns is obviously the taller man with better reach and with that great right hand of his wouldn't it be smarter on his part to try and box Hagler...if ever there was a fighter to KO Hagler it could have been him.

Any experts can aswer this?

machismo...in that first round in my opinion hearns landed the better shots.. but even if hearns had tried to stay out of range and box hagler would have brought it into range very quickly

Staying at range is easier said than done when fighting Hagler.

Hearns also broke his hand very early n the fight. You can see it happen, he lands a big punch to Haglers forehead.

Not a smart strategy but if you've seen any of the buildup for that fght, there was a lot of trashtalking. Hagler and Herans were not pals.

Other than Duran, Hagler was just about the only other quality fighter that was willing to simply slug it out with a prime Hearns. I'm pretty sure Tommy couldn't believe his luck when Hagler was just willing to stand in front of him and exchange.

What he also couldn't believe however was how Hagler ate his punches and then started to land his own power shots, and by then it was too late.

Yeah, as said, Tommy has legend power. He's one of the top p4p punchers. If you could hit like that you'd probably have no problem letting a guy slug it out with you.

Just turns out Hagler has a chin that is nuts.

No fault to The Hitman of course, he dusted more than one legendary beard with that right hand of his.

They basically through everything out the window and went for it from round one! That was Hearns downfall.

Hagler eats big punchers for breakfast.

Hearns thought he could do to Hagler what he did to Duran. But there's a difference between the middleweight of the 80s and the lightweight of the seventies.

How could a 5'9 guy consistently make taller fighters fight? He can do it if he has a 75 inch reach. That is right. Hagler at 5'9 has the reach of someone that is 6'3.

And we already talked about Hagler's epic chin. The only way I can ever see Hagler going out it if you hit him with the hardest, unexpected shot. You can land the most massive bomb on him, but if he shrugs it off, it's over. Once he takes you best shot and survives, he will talk through your shit afterwards. It's just how it goes...

Hagler instigated the alley-war because he said it was the only way he thought he could beat Hearns as Hearns had most of the advantages: taller, longer reach, younger, better boxer.
Hagler said a WAR was the only chance he had of beating Hearns, and he turned it into one from the get-go.

Hitman Hearns, with all those KO's, was happy to oblige Hagler at first, but after that first brutal rd where Hearns broke his hand, Hearns DID in fact change up his game and attempted to box Hagler instead of slug with him, but Hagler's pressure was relentless. Hearns just couldn't keep Hagler off him. Hagler imposed his will. Tommy Hearns did what was available to him, but it just wasn't enough.
The better fighter won.

Great fight!!! One of my favorites.

I think Hearns may have been weight drained for that fight.

His legs turned to spaghetti before he got hit with big punches; he was just spent pretty much after the first.

^ no way. hearns weighed like 160 lbs for that fight. he just got beat by a better fighter that night.
