I have boiled it down to two schools to join here in vegas tomorrow when i get off work, Sergio Penhas or another school wich has some purple belts teaching at times. In no way am i saying that one school is better than the other or putting down any school.

What is your opinion, Sergio Penha (learn from Sergio) 2 times a week (all I can do due to job), or other place for 3 to 4 times a week (they offer more convenient times that go w/ work).

What do you guys think?

Isn't Cobra kai out there too? I hear great things about them.

If I was in the same spot, I would go with penha, (assuming you like his classes) and make friends with your classmates so maybe you could buy some mats and drill or train with them on the days you can't make it to class. Hope that helps some!

Train more. The difference in quality is probably way over your head.

Also, don't train at Cobra Kai. That guy is a big mouth idiot.

Train at the place where you can get the most mat time.

Sergio Penha knows BJJ. No disrepect to the school being run by the purple belts but Sergio Penha has forgotten more BJJ than 99.9% of purple belts know.

Sergio Penha is a technician. His closed guard is sick. I guess it really depends on what you are looking for but in my opinion if you want to learn technique go to Sergio if you want to just train then go to the other spot.

Why do you say quality or quantity? Maybe you could have them both at the purple belt's school. Try a class at each school and pay attention to the instuctor AND the students. You'll probably know right away which school is for you.

Im out of my element here, I love BJJ but still a whitebelt. With that being said, I have also heard great things about Cobra Kai. Whats the deal?

he might be, but he is also a (reputedly) fantastic instructor and himself and his team have been very successful in grappling tournaments

Heres why I wouldn't train at Cobra Kai.

Nothing wrong with learning the basics from purple belts. Most things you learn in BJJ are from other students anyway. I think around purple is when you REALLY need to consider who is the head instructor. So just starting out, it just depends on where you feel more comfortable.

I also think mat time is the more important thing to consider. 2 times a week isn't really much training.

But yes... Sergio Penha's very good. I also think Team Mica has a very good team as well as Ricardo Cavalcanti. Ricardo's school is very big though, so classes feel a little crowded sometimes.

We wouldn't want to insult a Gracie, because surely they're all honorable men.

personally id go for quantity, training 4x a week will improve your game regardless of where you are training.

I agree. Until you're far enough along for a purple belt's knowledge to have become expended, then you're better training more often.

Your muscle memory will be better, your conditioning will be better and there is nothing that gets your breathing and thinking right quite like mat time.

When it's time to look at other options, you'll know.

Sorry..I have to disagree with you on this for the following reason:

If you are training 4 times a week, but not training proper technique, you will only be ingraining bad habits which will be harder to overcome and break later on.

However, if you are training 4 times a week but receiving good quality and proper instruction, then yes, I would agree that quantity would be better.

I just see alot of guys that train like 6 times a week, but their technique and progress is terrible as they are not receiving proper quality instruction.

While I totally agree with your sentiment, I'd just like to point out that this is a purple belt doing the training for a white belt. I'd like to think (I hope anyway) that a purple belt would have a sufficient grasp of the white belt techniques, such that, there will be no improper techniques being taught.

Once the purple belt is teaching beyond his depth, then I'd totally agree with you.
