Pyramid Pushups?

Occasionally during our PT sessions, the leadership will have us do pyramid pushups before we go run or whatever is scheduled for the day.

Basically, it goes like this:

One pushup, rollover and do one empty handed overhead press.
Roll back over, two pushups, two overhand presses.

Etc. up to 8-10, then back down to one.

Is this beneficial? If so, how? It burns like hell and I'm not a huge fan of bodyweight exercises as it is but I know they have their place. Would I be better served just doing extra pushups?
 
It's just a burnout alternative to kill your arms. I've been told you'll be doing many pyramid pushups at BMT, so you might as well get used to them.

Guess it's a good thing I went through BMT in 99 then. :P

To be honest, I'd rather save my energy for my lifts.
