in my stance, when i have my closed fists up in front of my face so that the palms are facing each other... as i punch with my right, and i turn my right fist inward so that my knuckles are lined up horizontally and my elbow turns to point outward to my right... how far should i turn my fists inward (in this case im turning it counterclockwise since its my right hand)???

is there an optimal amount? is there any point in turning it any further than u need for the knuckles to be horizontal with palms facing the ground?

Consult your striking coach/teacher if you have one.
Basically, though, it's personal preference. Different people can punch well with different amounts of turning. There's no need to go past palms facing down.

does the twist really add that much more power? or is it all in the shoulders and hips

it adds some. also has the benefit of raising your shoulder in front of your chin.

You can tell if you are turning your fists too much if you start having marks on your pinky and ring fingers. I have a habit for twisting my wrists too much when i throw punches and you can see my pinkyu knuckle has a red spot.

It defends you chin pretty good. But it defends your chin less from a punch from inside.

I wouldn't punch that way without any wraps or gloves on. You will break your wrist pretty easily. Also is a normal hook, more dangerous, because you can hit him right on the chin. With the hook you discribes it's also easy to block that punch. Kind the same technique you use while you block a highkick.

You can throw that punch once in a while, but when you throw him time after time, your opponent will have a easy time blocking them.

The only time it honestly makes a difference is when you're in the guard striking. If you throw straight punches the he can throw his hips up for armbars. So, I turn my punches over like throwing overhands when striking. If he tries to do any attacks then you just turn your shoulder and "limp arm" out (think omoplata defense).

Plus, you'll be sweaty from throwing all those bombs and he'll slip off and you have a good chance to pass and increase your damage potential. The only danger is a triangle if your forget about your free hand, so dont let it go outside of his guard (he'll triangle you) and if your arm goes out of his guard then shrug your head though too (prepare omoplata defense).

Think Fedor.
