So I’ve watched a few diddly videos and have seen the cue to pull the bar back rather than up. Supposedly this helps use your own bodyweight to leverage against the bar. I don’t know how to do this so this may explain my shit deadlift.

So how do you pull? Back or up?

I saw this video a few weeks back, I think it might be relevant. JP pivots at the ankle to put his weight behind the bar to act as a counterbalance.

Pull back is one of my cues along with keeping the bar close to the shins. It just helps keep me in position. The first sign of me getting out of position is folding over with weight transferring to the toes and the bar getting away from my shin. I'm sure if I just looked at a deadlift as moving the weight up, it would happen often.
