For all of you who have no striking experience, a good chin is supposed to be a LAST resort. This means that footwork, sharp defense, effective countering, head movement, and both the threat and reality of your own offense are all supposed to keep you from eating hard shots. Only very occasionally should an elite fighter be taking devastating shots flush and undefended. What Whitaker is doing is BAD.
It is far better to be elusive with excellent defense than it is to be very hittable, but able to hang on. Being knocked around every fight is how damage accumulates and fighters’ primes are shortened. An elite fighter should NOT be getting into enough wars for fans to marvel at his chin each fight.
Whitaker’s coach has A LOT of work to do or his fighter will never achieve his full potential.
