So while at work a coworker and I were talking about lifting in general and we got on the subject of protein shakes and he tells me they are bad for me and can cause Fatty Liver Syndrome. So I look Fatty Liver Syndrome up on the net and all I find says is that it is caused by being exposed to chemicals and other things but does not mention protein shakes at all. Was wondering if anyone else had ever heard this or of any other health effects concerning shakes.

No. I would try to distance myself from that co-worker as well.

There's one certain health effect concerning protein shakes.

They get you more healthy.

Barring food allergies, pre-existing medical conditions, or extreme circumstances, anyone who says otherwise is yankin' your chain. And your co-worker has less than zero idea what he's talking about.

there are two types of this ailment. One is Alcoholic Fatty Liver and Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver. The latter occurs when someone's body fat % (not BMI) becomes excessively high, treading in and above the Obese category. If you're a fat piece of crap already, and decide to add protein shakes to your already redundant calorie intake, then maybe.

Direct connection between protein shakes and NAFL? No. Your coworker is either misinformed or an asshole.
