Tavares is just as good a wrestler as Brunson if not better but Edmen finished him too early for us to see his whole game. 10/11 fights hes had ended in the 1st round most 1 minute and under

we see fighters like this exposed all the time. A prospect is never legit until

    1) their gurappling has been tested, mainly defensively
    2) they show cardio, as most early finishers tend to have bad cardio. Not all the time but many times weve seen this
    3) face adversity - this might take more time to see but its worth noting

this is why Chimaev is still untested. We havent seen him face any of the above 3 yet

Cain (as a prospect) used to finish his fights early but became champ. He's the real deal. It's about knowing when to step up when it counts.

After that though he became so injury prone that we never got to see him match up with the rest of the top 10. JDS was the one who actually cleaned out most of the division whereas Cain's accomplishments and praise all come from those 2 wins.

Ronda made a career of that and became an ATG

*** every fighter needs to face adversity... so when you are fighting the top tier and get cut or pounded for a round ... know that you have the heart , skill and mentality not to fold up right there...

10 out of 11 fights for Edmen may have been speedy...but the remaining 1 was a split decision and, if memory serves, pretty wrestle heavy. So there was some reason to think that both cardio and grappling existed. But your general premise still stands.

The problem is a lot of the fanbase get hyped for very early finishes and view them as a greater achievement.

If I'm not mistaken, Khamzat has never seen a third round. Will be interesting to see what happens when he meets someone like Alex Oliveira, or Geoff Neal. Not jumping on the hypetrain 'til he does

I was sure Jones was the real deal when elbowed matyshenko's face in. Even though he finished most of his fights early, there was just something about him manhandling his opponents

I agree with all 3 of your points, but we can presume Chimaev has top level defensive grappling. The man's been wrestling since 1 years old, and was the Swedish national champion in Freestyle Wrestling.

He's so underrated when people discuss the greatest HW fighters. Shills like Rogan go on and on about Cain but never mention a word about how great prime JDS was. He never had an easy can crushing fight in the UFC, he debuted against Werdum of all ppl.
