I keep reading all these articles about how promoters stop fights from happening and basically stall a lot of boxers' career's by having them fight chumps for easy money. Why then, would a boxer want a promoter in the first place?

They could always just BS their way on to Golden Boy cards by pretending to be way worse than they are. Would it be impossible to be the perpetual opponent, if said fighter maintained an undefeated record?

I'm probably missing something here but boxing is much harder to understand than MMA.

No it's not, MMA functions the exact same way. Only in MMA, there are less Promoters to have to pander to, and the pay sucks far more.

Promoters, in theory, are the organizers of the events. They're supposed to put asses in the seats with marketing. They're responsible for the production, advertisement, press, etc. As much as it sucks to say, the Sport doesn't really run without them.

RJJr has promoted himself @ times (and has said that it was a bad idea, as it split his attention too much from the task @ hand).

Floyd Mayweather also promotes himself @ present, but he didn't start out that way, but that guy is a freak of nature.

Both of them were able to give it a go because their names were already built up, though. The average guy just starting out NEEDS a promoter.
