Summer starts early this year in PFL. First card coming up next Thursday already on ESPN2 & ESPN+.

Remember this being a real earner last year. Didn't get to watch any due to time difference (at work when it's on) but looking forward to it

Still no idea why they are giving $1M to womens LW tournament. There's a reason promotions don't outlast the UFC, UFC doesn't make brain-dead decisions like that but it will be fun while it's around.

With Louis Taylor not medically cleared to fight at 170 pounds and Svetlana Khautova also off the card, the updated PFL 1 lineup now includes the following men's welterweight and women's lightweight matchups:

MAIN CARD (ESPN2, 9 p.m. ET)

  • Kayla Harrison vs. Larissa Pacheco
  • John Howard vs. Magomed Magomedkerimov
  • Ray Cooper III vs. Zane Kamaka
  • Morgan Frier vs. Sarah Kaufman
  • David Michaud vs. Sadibou Sy
PRELIMS (ESPN+, 6:30 p.m. ET)

  • Handesson Ferreira vs. Bojan Velickovic
  • Bobbi Jo Dalziel vs. Genah Fabian
  • Glaico Franca vs. Gamzat Khiramagomedov
  • Chris Curtis vs. Andre Fialho
  • Moriel Charneski vs. Roberta Samad

They are basically just trying to make Harrison a star. She's going to be the overwhelming favorite to win it. I'm not saying I think $1m is a great investment on that front, but that's all it is, an avenue to get Kayla as much attention as they can.

Oh I get why they've done but they're in a dream world if they think that will have a positive ROI. Guys like Cerrone/Jacare and even outside the UFC like Mousasi won't make $1M this year but we'll pay a WMMA newbie that? Madness

The smart thing to do would be having that tournament pay $150K but the negative PR that would bring about 'equality' would be a bit overwhelming. PFL won't be around long making decisions like this though. I'm sure they thought they'd attract bigger names for season 2 (I too thought they would) and this is a bit of a plan B

Probably true. Could be some desperation involved. They are hoping Harrison becomes a Rousey-like phenomenon and they can ride that wave to huge ratings, etc.

Problem is, they'll be broke before she ever gathers that much steam. The more likely scenario is she easily runs through this field and collects her $1m, PFL folds, and she tries to make 145 (she said she **might** be able to) to set up a superfight with Nunes. She's super green and needs WAY more experience before that fight should happen, but I could see it being forced because they have literally no credible contenders for Nunes to fight anymore.

Don't be so doom & gloom guys, these million dollar prizes for winning the season long tournaments are part of the appeal of PFL. It would be great if Kayla becomes a star and certainly help their future, but they went into this full well knowing that as an absolute meritocracy points based league system that one or more of these million dollar collective purses in each of eight weight classes can easily end up in the hands of someone with at least one Magomed in their name who doesn't even speak English. So it's not all about creating stars. They have some well financed investors and a new deal with ESPN so they surely have the budget with just a ten card season to sustain themselves for at least the 2019 season and I hope many more.

I hope you're right. I like the format.

My point was just with the women's LW, there is no talent at all to sustain that as a division (regardless of the format). They don't necessarily need to build stars with the men's tourneys (although I'm sure they wouldn't mind it). The appeal is in competitive fights, guys going for finishes when they need them to advance (due to the format), etc. They want quality product for sure, but in part, the appeal is also with the way they set it up.

With women's LW, they don't really have the drama, unpredictability, and quality depth of competition that the men's tourneys have. They have one elite athlete who recently transitioned into MMA from judo that should smash a bunch of overmatched opponents. But, that one person is American, has a very engaging personality, and at least has some potential to grow into a bigger name. So investing the same amount into her tourney is really just an endorsement of her. With the men, they weren't super invested in any one guy winning a specific division. With this women's LW, they NEED Kayla to win (and on top of that they need her to look dominant for the most part).

PFL will get more attention from me than Bellator. The DAZN deal sucks.

Thanks for this TS! I was trying to find it on NBCSN. I had forgotten they moved to ESPN2.

Cheers!

They are spamming ads with Harrison everywhere. PFL is all in on her

Ugh, was hoping for a line on Harrison-Pacheco, the only fight I won't have to do tape study for. Naturally, 5Dimes doesn't offer it.
