Yes I read the FAQs, but I still have a question. Would push-ups be an OK substitute for pull-ups in the BS5X5? I ask this because I can't do a pull up if my life depended on it...

no. Do negatives, or assisted pullups. Time spent trying to hold your chin above the bar would be time better spent than pushups.

no. push up is a pushing movement, pull ups are a pulling movement. Use an assisted pull up machine or do negatrives until you can do pullups.

If you don't have access to a assited pullup machine, use a pull down machine.

and no, that wasn't a stupid quesiton, these are stupid questions

ive been doing negatives and lats pulldowns while rehabbing my shoulders.

I was in the same boat before this past summer. I hadn't done a pull up in my life. It took me about 3 months of working at it to finally do one unassisted. Band assisted pull ups were the biggest help--I think having to do the full motion was important. Also, the finish at the top was the hardest part for me and the bands forced me to still work at those since the tension lessens at the top. Like everyone else said, negatives and holds were also important. Occasionally I'd also throw in jumping pull ups--my bar is low enough that i can push off with my toes. Those were good finishers to a pull up session. Just keep at it.
